Upcoming Extreme Heat in Metropolis

METROPOLIS, IL — Residents across Massac County are being urged to prepare for a prolonged stretch of dangerously high temperatures. Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse joined the WMOK Coffee Break Program this week to issue a vital safety and preparedness warning ahead of the upcoming weather event.

According to weather forecasts, heat indices are expected to skyrocket to around 110 degrees, with the extreme conditions projected to persist for a period of consecutive days. Chief Masse emphasized that conditions of this magnitude pose serious health and infrastructure risks that demand community-wide awareness.

In addition to physical health concerns, the multi-day heatwave is expected to put immense pressure on utilities. Chief Masse strongly reminded the public to do their part in keeping unnecessary strain off the power grid. Local households can significantly contribute to grid stability by limiting the use of large appliances—such as washers, dryers, and stoves—whenever possible during peak hours.

Taking these small, proactive steps can prevent local power interruptions and ensure that air conditioning units across our neighborhoods remain operational when they are needed most.

As the heat builds, remember to check on neighbors, keep pets indoors, and stay hydrated.

Water Main Repaired in Metropolis; Boil Water Order Issued for Fairmount Subdivision

Water Main Repaired in Metropolis; Boil Water Order Issued for Fairmount Subdivision

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – The City of Metropolis has successfully repaired a water main and restored service to affected residents.

However, as a precautionary measure, city officials have issued a Boil Water Order for the Fairmount Subdivision and the immediate area surrounding Kennedy Drive.

The order will remain in effect until bacteriological testing is completed to confirm the water is entirely safe to drink. Local officials express their gratitude to the community for their patience and understanding during the repair process and state that another update will be posted as soon as the order is lifted.

  • Water Service Restored: The City of Metropolis has repaired the water main; service is back up.

  • Boil Water Order: Active for the Fairmount Subdivision and the immediate area around Kennedy Drive.

  • Duration: In effect until bacteriological testing confirms the water is safe.

  • Updates: The city will post an update immediately once the order is lifted.

Chief Masse Reflects on Successful, Superman Celebration

METROPOLIS, IL — The capes have cleared and the streets are quiet again, but local officials are calling this year’s Superman Celebration a massive success. Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse shared his wrap-up of the event with WMOK, noting a significant surge in attendance.

According to Chief Masse, crowd sizes felt noticeably larger this year compared to last year’s event, bringing a fantastic energy—and plenty of foot traffic—to Metropolis.

Low Number of Incidents Reported

Despite the booming crowds, Chief Masse reported that the celebration remained largely safe and peaceful. Over the course of the multi-day event, emergency personnel responded to just three medical calls.

Property crimes were low. Police responded to only one reported theft, which occurred overnight from Friday into Saturday. A festival vendor advised officers that a tray of meat had been stolen from their setup.

Carnival Run Deemed a Success

This year’s carnival setup came with prior community concerns regarding its close proximity to a nearby residential neighborhood. To ensure peace of mind for local citizens, Chief Masse took a hands-on approach.

  • Proactive Patrols: Chief Masse personally walked the surrounding neighborhood during the event to check for any disruptions, noise issues, or traffic problems.

  • No Neighbor Complaints: He confirmed to WMOK that there were absolutely no reports of problems or complaints from the residents living near the carnival grounds.

Social Media Report Addressed

While the event went smoothly overall, Chief Masse did note one specific issue that surfaced online. Law enforcement became aware of a social media post in which a parent advised that their child had been spoken to inappropriately by a carnival worker.

Masse said that though the officers had not heard anything aside from “carnival barking”, the matter was addressed with the management of the carnival and discussed during a Friday morning employee meeting of carnival staff.
