Illinois drivers get a temporary breather at the pump. Under Public Act 104-0468, signed in June 2026, the state has officially suspended the scheduled Consumer Price Index adjustment for the motor fuel tax rate until 2027. Consequently, current motor fuel tax rates will remain entirely unchanged for the next six months.
The decision to freeze the fuel tax rate came down to state budget negotiations in Springfield.
Under the 2019 “Rebuild Illinois” law, the state gas tax automatically increases every year on July 1st based on inflation (the Consumer Price Index). However, with drivers facing high prices at the pump, state lawmakers introduced a freeze as part of the fiscal year 2027 revenue package.
The General Assembly passed the freeze to offer six months of temporary relief to drivers, keeping gasoline locked at 48.3¢ per gallon and diesel at 55.8¢ per gallon through December 31, 2026.
Governor J.B. Pritzker then signed Public Act 104-0468 into law on June 16, 2026, officially halting the automatic 1.3-cent hike that was scheduled to take effect.
