ISP Continues to Seek Information on 1984 Cold Case Suspect George E. Bradfield

WMOK – Massac County, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Zone 7 continues to seek assistance from the public as they continue their investigation into George E. Bradfield.

Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who knew, worked with, or had contact with Bradfield during the 1980s or throughout his life.

1965 Owensboro KY High School Yearbook

Case Synopsis: The Murder of Lisa Carnes

The ongoing investigation stems from a multi-decade effort to find answers in the death of 26-year-old Lisa Ann Carnes.

1.Discovery of the Victim:March 30, 1984.

The body of 26-year-old Lisa Ann Carnes was discovered in a rural field in Massac County, Illinois. An autopsy confirmed she died from a single gunshot wound. The Massac County Sheriff’s Office launched the initial investigation, but the case eventually went cold.

2.Forensic Advancements:2024–2026.

Over four decades later, advancements in forensic science and DNA technology gave investigators a fresh breakthrough. ISP DCI Zone 7 spearheaded a renewed push, collaborating with the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit and Parabon NanoLabs Inc. to analyze decades-old evidence.

3.Charges Filed:April 22, 2026.

Following the forensic breakthrough, a Massac County Grand Jury returned a five-count murder indictment against George E. Bradfield. He was subsequently taken into custody by local authorities in Owensboro, Kentucky, where he was residing.

4.Extradition and Pre-Trial Detainment:May–June 2026.

Bradfield waived extradition in Kentucky and was returned to Illinois to face the charges. A Massac County judge denied Bradfield’s motion for pre-trial release, ruling that he remains a “real and present threat to the safety of the community.” He is being held without bond pending his trial.

From "The Fogger" to Flower Beds

Leaning on backyard botany is a massive shift from how communities used to handle summer pests. Anyone who grew up in the mid-to-late 20th century likely remembers a very different kind of mosquito control: the local “mosquito truck.”

It was a staple of summer evenings. You would hear the loud, mechanical whine of the machine coming down the block, pumping out a thick, sweet-smelling white fog of chemical insecticide. Instead of running inside, neighborhood kids would routinely drop their bicycles and chase directly behind the truck, completely disappearing into the dense, artificial cloud of smoke.

Today, we know a lot more about what was actually in those chemical clouds, and the days of running wild through the pesticide fog have faded into local history. Turning to aromatic backyard plants is a much gentler, entirely non-toxic way to reclaim your patio.

The Catch: Setting Realistic Expectations

While these plants look and smell incredible, simply placing them in a pot on your deck will not create an invisible, bug-proof shield.

How it actually works: The bug-repelling oils remain locked safely inside the plant’s leaves. To actually release the volatile compounds into the air, the foliage typically needs to be crushed, bruised, or rubbed against your skin.

For the best results, use these aromatic plants as a helpful secondary line of defense alongside traditional mosquito control methods, such as eliminating standing water where pests breed.

The Natural Defenders

Most mosquito-repelling plants rely on their strong essential oils to mask the scents that draw mosquitoes to humans (like carbon dioxide and lactic acid). Here are three of the most popular varieties to consider adding to your green spaces:

1. Citronella (Mosquito Plant)

Often sold explicitly as a “mosquito plant,” this is actually a variety of scented geranium (Pelargonium graveolens). Its deeply lobed leaves carry a distinct citrus fragrance.

2. Lavender

Famous for its soothing fragrance and beautiful purple blooms, lavender contains a high concentration of linalool. This compound is highly aromatic to us, but quite offensive to mosquitoes and other pests.

3. Marigolds

These bright, hardy annuals contain pyrethrum, a naturally occurring compound used in many commercial insect repellents. They make excellent border plants for vegetable gardens and seating areas.
