Massac Memorial Hospital Highlights Importance of Low-Dose CT Lung Screenings for Lung Cancer Awareness Month

WMOK – METROPOLIS, IL — In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Massac Memorial Hospital is encouraging area residents to prioritize their health through early detection.

Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths nationwide, but healthcare professionals emphasize that early detection can make a life-saving difference. To help community members catch potential issues early, Massac Memorial Hospital provides convenient, high-quality diagnostic imaging services close to home.

Low-Dose CT Lung Screenings are designed to detect lung cancer in its earliest stages—often before any symptoms appear—when treatment options are typically most effective.

Are You at Risk? Local healthcare providers note that individuals may qualify for a low-dose CT lung screening if they meet the following criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 50 and 80

  • Have a history of heavy smoking (20 pack-years or more)

  • Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years

Residents are encouraged not to wait for symptoms to appear. Anyone meeting the criteria should speak with their healthcare provider to determine if a Low-Dose CT Lung Screening is right for them.

To learn more about scheduling a screening, community members can contact Massac Memorial Hospital at 618-524-2176 ext. 2244.
