IDPH Responds to Measles Outbreak in Douglas County

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has mobilized alongside local public health agencies to respond to an outbreak of measles in nearby Douglas County, where at least four confirmed, linked cases have been identified.

Under public health guidelines, an outbreak is declared when three or more cases share a common exposure source or epidemiological link.

IDPH is working closely with area health departments and medical providers to trace individuals who may have been exposed during the patients’ infectious periods. Health officials are offering post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which can be administered within 72 hours of initial exposure to unvaccinated individuals six months of age and older. For high-risk individuals—including infants, pregnant individuals, and those who are immunocompromised—immune globulin injections are available if they cannot receive the vaccine or missed the 72-hour window.

State officials emphasize that immunization remains the most effective defense against the virus, with two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine providing 97% protection.

“Illinois is fortunate to have high vaccination rates overall that protect most Illinois residents from measles,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra. “However, there are still areas across the state with lower vaccination rates where people are at high risk. With almost 3,000 cases in the U.S. so far this year, IDPH has been preparing and works closely with local public health and healthcare partners on strategies to reduce spread and minimize outbreaks.”

Health officials recommend that anyone who is non-immune consult a healthcare provider about getting vaccinated, particularly at least two weeks prior to international travel or travel to regions experiencing outbreaks. Medical providers are urged to stay alert for potential symptoms and notify local health departments immediately upon suspecting a case.
