Today Is
Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th and Its Superstitions
Friday the 13th, a date that has been shrouded in superstition for centuries, continues to captivate and intrigue people around the world. This seemingly innocuous combination of day and date has been associated with bad luck, superstitions, and even fear.
The origins of this superstition are unclear, but various theories exist. Some trace it back to Christian beliefs, suggesting that Jesus was crucified on a Friday, and there were thirteen guests at the Last Supper. Others point to historical events like the arrest of the Knights Templar on a Friday the 13th.
Over time, popular culture has amplified the fear surrounding this day, spawning a successful horror movie franchise, “Friday the 13th.” The series centers around the fictional character Jason Voorhees, a masked killer who haunts teenagers at the fictional Camp Crystal Lake.
While many people dismiss the superstitions as mere folklore, others remain cautious on this day. Some even have triskaidekaphobia, a fear of the number 13, which intensifies their apprehension.
Regardless of one’s beliefs, Friday the 13th continues to be a day that provokes curiosity, fear, and fascination, leaving us to question whether it’s just an amalgamation of coincidences or a genuinely ominous date.

The Massac County Farm Bureau Farmers Market Has Ended for the 2023 Season
... But you can still find our farmers locally until their season ends
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – The Massac County Farm Bureau officially ended the weekly Farmers Market at Dorothy Miller Park in late September – however local farmers will continue to make their produce available to the community until their growing season ends.
A popular spot for Massac County farmers to make their good available to the community is what many know as the “former Clark School lot” on East 5th Street.
Mr. Verbarg has told WMOK that he will set up on that lot throughout the end of his growing season. He currently has apples as well as other produce and recently told WMOK that he will soon have turnips.
All Massac County farmers are invited to let us know at WMOK what produce you have available and when/where your goods will be available.

Misinformation about the Israel-Hamas war is flooding social media. Here are the facts
In the days since Hamas militants stormed into Israel early Oct. 7, a flood of videos and photos purporting to show the conflict have filled social media, making it difficult for onlookers from around the world to sort fact from fiction.
While plenty of real imagery and accounts of the ensuing carnage have emerged, they have been intermingled with users pushing false claims and misrepresenting videos from other events.
Among the fabrications, users have shared false claims that a top Israeli commander had been kidnapped, circulated a doctored White House memo purporting to show President Joe Biden announcing billions in aid for Israel, and pushed old and unrelated videos of Russian President Vladimir Putin with inaccurate English captions.
Here is a closer look at the misinformation spreading online — and the facts. CLAIM: A video shows a BBC News report confirming Ukraine provided weapons to Hamas.
US cities boost security as fears spread over Israel-Hamas war despite lack of credible threats
BOSTON (AP) — Police in New York, Los Angeles, and other U.S. cities increased patrols, authorities put up fencing around the U.S. Capitol and some schools closed Friday amid fears of violence inspired by the Israel-Hamas war. But law enforcement officials stressed there were no credible threats in the U.S.
A former Hamas leader’s call for a day of rage put American Jewish communities on edge, and sparked heightened security around houses of worship, schools and cultural institutions. The jitters were a sign of just how much the war between Israel and Hamas is reverberating around the world, striking fear in communities even in the absence of a credible threat.
Law enforcement officials said they were on high alert for violence driven by antisemitic or Islamophobic sentiments in the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel. Jewish and Muslim groups have reported an increase of hateful and threatening rhetoric on social media.

How Gen-X Can Better Plan For Retirement
The youngest members of Generation-X are now in their 40s, while the oldest Gen-Xers are now in their late 50s. This means it is time for Gen-X to get serious about retirement planning. Are you saving enough for retirement? Are you on track for financial freedom? Sadly, many members of Gen-X will answer no to both of these questions.
As a younger Gen-Xer, I enjoy watching my friends enter their peak earning years. For some, this will be an opportunity to get ahead financially. Others may take this opportunity to supercharge their lifestyle inflation. We are just old enough to earn some serious money, yet too young (in many cases) to see our Baby Boomer parents run into financial troubles in their retirement years. Now is the time for Gen-X to get moving on developing a plan to achieve financial freedom.
What can Gen-X do now to get the best financial freedom and retirement-planning advice? Could a great financial advisor help you avoid costly investing mistakes?
