Dog Park Opening Soon on the Metropolis Riverfront – WMOK’s Discussion from April 2026 with Mayor Jeffords

Dog Park Opening Soon on the Metropolis Riverfront - WMOK's Discussion from April 2026 with Mayor Jeffords

As we await the finishing touches and the opening of the Metropolis dog park,
we review our conversation from April with Metropolis Mayor Gregg Jeffords.

METROPOLIS, IL – Four-legged residents of Metropolis will soon have a new place to run and play. During a March City Council meeting, officials approved the development of a dedicated dog park at the north end of Dorothy Miller Park.

The move comes after ongoing discussions regarding community needs for a secure, off-leash area for local pets. Dorothy Miller Park, known for its scenic riverfront views and abundance of trees, was selected as the ideal site due to its central location and available space at the northern boundary.

Construction Challenges and Progress

While the project is nearing completion, crews faced initial delays in construction within the originally planned space. The presence of underground “fill”—including concrete and rock—made digging in the area a difficult and expensive process, requiring extra work to properly prepare the site.

What to Expect

Planned features for the new facility include:

  • Fenced-In Areas: Separate sections for large and small breed dogs to ensure safety for all sizes.

  • Agility Equipment: Basic obstacles for exercise and training.

  • Water Stations: Fresh water access for thirsty pups during the warmer Illinois months.

  • Shaded Seating: Benches for owners to relax while their dogs socialize.

Community Impact

Local advocates for the park believe this addition will not only benefit pet owners but also help maintain the cleanliness of the rest of Dorothy Miller Park by providing a designated spot for canine activity.

Mayor Gregg Jeffords told WMOK during our Coffee Break Program that work on the project was set to begin following initial approvals, overcoming early groundwork hurdles to bring the community closer to a dedicated off-leash space.

The park remains a hub for the Massac County Farmers Market and other community gatherings, so the dog park is designed to complement these existing uses without interfering with the pavilion or vendor areas.

Navigating Tenant Rights and Rental Standards in Massac County

Navigating Tenant Rights and Rental Standards in Massac County

METROPOLIS — As community members across Southern Illinois work to ensure safe and stable living conditions for their families, understanding state and local housing laws remains a critical priority for renters and property owners alike.

Under Illinois law, residential lease agreements carry an implicit standard known as the “implied warranty of habitability.” This legal framework mandates that rental properties must be maintained in a safe, healthy, and livable condition. Essential standards cover structural sound integrity—such as weatherproof roofs and secure walls—alongside working plumbing, heating, and electrical systems.

Housing experts and legal advocates outline several fundamental steps for tenants navigating maintenance concerns or structural repairs:

  • Formal Written Communication: Property maintenance issues should be documented in writing and delivered promptly to property managers to establish a clear timeline.

  • Official Municipal Inspections: Local city and county code enforcement officers can be requested to inspect structures and log official reports on building safety violations.

  • Legal Guidance on Rent Modifications: Illinois law maintains specific, strict protocols regarding rent withholding or repair-and-deduct options. Legal professionals strongly advise consulting legal resources prior to altering rent payments to ensure compliance with court standards.

  • Accessing Regional Legal Aid: Organizations such as Land of Lincoln Legal Aid provide free consultation and advocacy for qualifying individuals facing housing disputes, court proceedings, or eviction notices.

WMOK will continue working to bring regional housing authorities, legal counsel, and local public safety representatives to the airwaves to offer clear, actionable information for area residents.

Running from October 5, 2026, through February 26, 2027, the initiative aims to gather recycled plastic bottle caps and lids to craft recycled park furnishings and a dedicated memorial bench honoring the memory of Chad Lewis.

The initiative’s goal is set at 4,800 pounds of caps, culminating on February 26—which marks Chad’s birthday, when he would have turned 48.

How to Participate & Drop-Off Locations

Residents are encouraged to save clean plastic caps and lids to drop off at various convenient collection points throughout Metropolis:

Big John: 1200 E. 5th St.

Collection Guidelines

To ensure items are processed through Green Tree Plastics’ ABC Promise Partnership program, community members should follow these guidelines:

Collect clean plastic caps and lids only.

Remove metal and non-plastic materials prior to drop-off.

Do not include bottles or larger plastic containers—caps and lids only.

More Information & Pickups

For residents who need assistance with pickup or would like more details about the project, organizers can be reached by phone or text at 618-638-0855.
