(2021-07-26) WMOK – Metropolis, IL – As yard sale season peaks, Metropolis Abatement Officer John Roman reminded us of our city ordinances on yard sale signs.
Yard sale signs must not be posted or attached in any way to any City-owned pole or structure.
Yard sale signs must not in any way obstruct the view of traffic.
Yard sale signs must not be placed in the city easement. The city easement is the area between the sidewalk and the curb.
While Roman hasn’t issued any tickets for misplaced yard sale signs during his tenure as Abatement Officer, he advises that the likelihood of doing so exists and is increasing. Roman said many people putting yard sale signs on poles don’t take them down, leaving trash around town.
Roman said as an avid yard sale attendee it would trouble him to have to write tickets; however, he has to weigh that concern against the time spent removing yard sale signs from poles and structures around Metropolis every Monday morning.
Roman offered some solid suggestions for yard sale promotion that do not involve breaking Metropolis’ Sign Ordinance:
- Legally park your vehicle in a high-traffic location
- Put signs on your vehicle’s windows for your yard sale
