As we await the finishing touches and the opening of the Metropolis dog park,
we review our conversation from April with Metropolis Mayor Gregg Jeffords.
METROPOLIS, IL – Four-legged residents of Metropolis will soon have a new place to run and play. During a March City Council meeting, officials approved the development of a dedicated dog park at the north end of Dorothy Miller Park.
The move comes after ongoing discussions regarding community needs for a secure, off-leash area for local pets. Dorothy Miller Park, known for its scenic riverfront views and abundance of trees, was selected as the ideal site due to its central location and available space at the northern boundary.
Construction Challenges and Progress
While the project is nearing completion, crews faced initial delays in construction within the originally planned space. The presence of underground “fill”—including concrete and rock—made digging in the area a difficult and expensive process, requiring extra work to properly prepare the site.
What to Expect
Planned features for the new facility include:
-
Fenced-In Areas: Separate sections for large and small breed dogs to ensure safety for all sizes.
-
Agility Equipment: Basic obstacles for exercise and training.
-
Water Stations: Fresh water access for thirsty pups during the warmer Illinois months.
-
Shaded Seating: Benches for owners to relax while their dogs socialize.
Community Impact
Local advocates for the park believe this addition will not only benefit pet owners but also help maintain the cleanliness of the rest of Dorothy Miller Park by providing a designated spot for canine activity.
Mayor Gregg Jeffords told WMOK during our Coffee Break Program that work on the project was set to begin following initial approvals, overcoming early groundwork hurdles to bring the community closer to a dedicated off-leash space.
The park remains a hub for the Massac County Farmers Market and other community gatherings, so the dog park is designed to complement these existing uses without interfering with the pavilion or vendor areas.
