TEMPORARY ROAD IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR BELL SMITH SPRINGS RECREATION AREA

/ WMOK

Visitors to the Shawnee National Forest are advised of an upcoming road improvement project at the Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area. Construction is scheduled to begin today, July 13, 2026, subject to local weather conditions.

The two-month project aims to address public concerns regarding current road conditions. Improvements will include upgrading all roads to a chip seal surface, replacing culverts, and reestablishing ditches to enhance roadway drainage. Additionally, the project will expand parking capacity by creating three new overflow parking areas.

To maintain some visitor access throughout the project, the work will be completed in three phases:

  • Phase 1: Work begins at Hunting Branch Road. The Bell Smith Springs trailhead and parking areas will remain open to the public during this time. Please note that the Red Bud Campground will remain open only until July 15.

  • Phase 2: This phase will focus on Bell Smith Springs Road south of Hunting Branch Road. Work will include the campground, parking lots, and bathroom access.

  • Phase 3: The remainder of Bell Smith Springs Road up to the entrance will be addressed. During this final phase, the entire site will be closed to the public until construction is complete.

Officials are asking the public to exercise caution when visiting the area due to the mobilization of construction equipment. Visitors are urged to adhere to all road closure signs and drive slowly for the safety of all.

While every effort is being made to provide early notice regarding specific closures, officials encourage those planning summer outings to consider other campgrounds and trails within the Shawnee National Forest.

For the latest project updates, visit the Shawnee National Forest website. Closures will be posted under the “Alerts” section and on their official Facebook and X pages. For additional information, you may contact the Supervisor’s Office at 618-253-7114.
