SUMMER TRAUMA SEASON COLLIDES WITH EMERGENCY BLOOD SHORTAGE ACROSS THE NATION

The American Red Cross has officially declared an emergency blood shortage, reporting a concerning 25% drop in the national blood supply throughout the month of June. This alert arrives as hospitals across the country enter the height of summer trauma season—a period traditionally marked by an increase in serious injuries resulting from car crashes, outdoor recreation, and workplace accidents.

As hospitals prepare for this surge in demand, the Red Cross reports that blood distributions are running nearly 3,500 units higher per week than originally anticipated. Meanwhile, a steep decline in donations since late May has created a significant gap between the supply on hand and the needs of patients.

Factors driving this decline include busy summer travel schedules, temporary illnesses, and the seasonal loss of school-based blood drives. With someone in the United States requiring a blood transfusion every two seconds, this gap poses a potential risk to patients relying on lifesaving care, including trauma victims, mothers facing childbirth complications, and individuals undergoing cancer treatment.

To help bolster the nation’s reserves, the Red Cross is offering an incentive: anyone who donates blood between July 13 and July 31 will receive a Fandango movie ticket by email, valued at up to $15.
