Flash Flooding Disrupts Massac County Roadways: Residents Advised to Exercise Extreme Caution

WMOK – Massac County, IL – After experiencing significant flash flooding overnight, the Massac County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Metropolis Police, are urging residents to take extreme caution. Motorists are encouraged to avoid traveling until daylight if possible, as road conditions and visibility remain dangerous.

Current reports highlight widespread impacts on local infrastructure:

– **Country Club Road:** Water is covering the road west of Massac Creek Road (near the golf course), with additional reports of washouts in various sections.

– **Rosebud Road:** Closed west of Route 145, with flooding reported east of North Avenue.

– **Franklin Road:** Currently impassable.

– **Unity School Road:** A fallen tree presents a hazard for motorists.

– **Jonesboro Road:** Closed near the intersection with Grinnell Road.

Massac County Youth Fair: Kickoff Amid Weather Monitoring and Rescheduled Events

The Massac County Youth Fair is set to kick off today amidst ongoing evaluations of weather conditions and safety measures concerning event activities. Organizers are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the well-being of all attendees.

In a recent update, it was announced that the 2026 Horse Show has been rescheduled for Sunday, July 19th, at 6 PM. The hope is that the arena will be dry by that time, and fair officials have committed to providing further updates as the situation develops.

As preparations continue, the community is encouraged to stay informed and ready for a fun-filled fair experience, weather permitting.

Next Parade in Metropolis - Labor Day

WMOK – Metropolis, IL –

Labor Day is a time to celebrate the hard work and spirit that define our community, and this year, we’re looking to make our local parade a special one. WMOK is proud to support the Metropolis Lions Club with promoting their mission as they prepare for this year’s festivities, and we are inviting all of our listeners in Metropolis, Massac County, Illinois, and beyond to take part.

Building Our Parade

A great parade relies on the participation of the neighbors and local organizations that make our area such a wonderful place to live. Whether you represent a business, a church, a school, or just a family wanting to join in the fun, we encourage you to be a part of the lineup. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase our local pride and enjoy a great day together.

How to Get Involved

The Metropolis Lions Club is organizing this year’s event and would love to hear from you if you are interested in participating. You can contact the organizers directly to register:

The Metropolis Lions Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Metropolis Community Center, located at 900 W 10th St., in the small conference room at 6:00 p.m.  Their next meeting is this Thursday evening, July 9th.

Summer Stretch: Making the Most of the Season

WMOK – Massac County, IL –

Now that we’ve made it to the other side of Independence Day, it’s the perfect time to catch your breath and look ahead. While the heat is on, we’re entering that sweet spot of summer where we can really lean into those goals we set back in the spring. Whether it’s tackling a home project, spending more time outdoors, or simply slowing down to enjoy a sunset, there is still plenty of time to make the most of the season before the pace picks up again.

As we look toward the coming months, keep in mind that the transition to the new school year is just around the corner. Here is a look at what is coming up for our local students and community:

Important Dates for Your Calendar

  • August 10: Teacher In-Service (Massac Unit 1 & Joppa-Maple Grove)

  • August 11: Teacher In-Service (Massac Unit 1 & Joppa-Maple Grove)

  • August 12: First Day of School (Massac Unit 1: 2pm Dismissal; Joppa-Maple Grove: First day back)

  • September 7: No School — Labor Day (Massac Unit 1)

School Registration Information

  • Massac Unit 1: Online re-registration for students returning in Grades 1 through 12 is available now through the Alma portal. For further details and to get your students registered, visit the official Massac Unit 1 registration page.

  • Joppa-Maple Grove: Existing students should log into the PowerSchool Parent Portal to complete registration. If you are new to the district or need assistance with your portal account, please reach out to the school office at mbaughman@joppa38.com.
