Metropolis City Council Set to Vote on Appropriations, Major Infrastructure, and Annexation Ordinances

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – The Metropolis City Council will convene for its regular meeting on Monday, September 14, 2026, in the Council Chambers at City Hall following the conclusion of the 6:30 p.m. Finance Committee meeting.

Led by Mayor Gregg Jeffords, the council faces a packed agenda featuring voting items on utility supplies, road repairs, redevelopment reimbursements, city appropriations, and multiple municipal annexation petitions.

The agenda outlines several significant actions impacting local infrastructure and city growth:

Utility & Infrastructure Payments: Consideration of $104,251.27 to USG Water Solutions for Water Department supplies and $24,650.22 to Vandevanter Engineering for Waste Water Plant supplies.

Road Construction Funding: Voting on a $796,886.00 payment to Samron Midwest Contracting for road repairs on Metropolis Street, funded via Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds.

Fitness Campaign & Utility Expansion: Formal action on a $139,050.00 quote from the National Fitness Campaign, as well as a $2,300,000.00 proposal from Amrent Contracting, Inc. for the construction of New Well #9.

Local Business & Redevelopment Grants: Motions to approve $7,898.04 in Business Improvement Grants to Tiffany Korte for four completed projects, along with redevelopment agreement reimbursements to Crockett Howard Properties, LLC ($20,000.00), Elite Innovations ($5,000.00), and Jeff Lange & Gary Brush ($20,000.00).

Annual Appropriations Ordinance: Official vote to adopt the Annual Appropriations Ordinance of the City of Metropolis for the 2026–2027 fiscal year.

Corporate Counsel & Annexations: Action on amending Chapter 156 of the municipal code regarding annexed territory, along with annexation petitions and agreements for Bejgums, LLC, James Burnham, and Loren J. & Christina M. Willmes.

The meeting will conclude with standard financial reports, department head updates, and an executive session before adjournment.

The Steele Wings Swing Dance is set to take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

The Steele Wings Swing Dance is set to take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026. This 1940s-themed evening serves as a key benefit for the construction of a statue honoring Metropolis native and WWII paratrooper John Marvin Steele, along with a memorial for all Massac County WWII fallen heroes.

What to Expect

Live Big Band Music: The evening typically features a full orchestra (past years have featured Steve Shininger & The ShinSings) playing authentic 1940s standards.
Vintage Attire: Attendees are encouraged to dress in their finest 1940s costumes. Trophies are traditionally awarded for the “Best Dressed Gal,” “Best Dressed Guy,” and “Best Dance Duo.”
Nostalgic Atmosphere: The event often includes period-appropriate hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and vintage photo opportunities to transport guests back in time.

Metropolis Lions Club Invites Local Groups & Sponsors for 2026 Labor Day Parade

METROPOLIS, IL — Super City Cleaners has named Walk for Hope 2026 as its official Community Partner for September in observance of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Throughout the entire month of September, the local business will donate $1 to Walk for Hope 2026 for every load of laundry processed. The annual initiative is held in remembrance of “Bango” Lindsey, honoring his legacy of local involvement and community support.

All funds generated through the monthly campaign stay directly within the local area to benefit community organizations and youth programs. Proceeds raised through the initiative support local youth football, provide academic scholarships for two local high school seniors, and fund youth group programming at Massac Mental Health.

The effort centers on remembering lost loved ones, raising mental health awareness, and continuing the community-minded mission that “Bango” Lindsey championed. Residents looking to contribute can support the cause throughout September by visiting Super City Cleaners.

Whether you are bringing antiques, vintage finds, handmade goods, home décor, clothing, collectibles, or delicious food, this event is shaping up to be a barn burner for local sellers.

Community Health Resource Fair and Cancer Walk Set for October 3 at Dorothy Miller Park

(WMOK) – Metropolis Hope Light Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, will host the Free Community Health Resource Fair and Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Dorothy Miller Park in Metropolis, Illinois, located next to Harrah’s Casino. A rain date has been scheduled for October 10.

The family-friendly event is open to all ages and features an easy walking path around the park where attendees can connect with regional healthcare and cancer support providers. Activities throughout the afternoon include games, bounce houses, activities, and prizes.

Cancer Warriors t-shirts will be available at the event for a donation of $10 or more, while supplies last. All donations directly support cancer programs, services, and local events across Southern Illinois.
