FBI Issues ViCAP Alert in 41-Year-Old Massac County Cold Case


METROPOLIS, Ill. —  In a renewed effort to bring resolution to a decades-old crime here in Massac County, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released a Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) Alert regarding the 1984 unsolved murder of Lisa Ann Carnes.

The alert, seeks information from the public who may have knowledge of events surrounding the homicide.

The 1984 Homicide

Lisa Ann Carnes, a 26-year-old White female, was tragically murdered in the spring of 1984.

Date of Discovery: March 30, 1984

Location: Her body was discovered in a field south of County Road 1150 N and east of US 45 in rural Massac County.

Cause of Death: An autopsy conducted on March 31, 1984, determined her death was caused by a gunshot wound to the chest. Blunt force trauma injuries were also noted by investigators.

Evidence: Authorities found several items of clothing located near the scene where Ms. Carnes’ body was discovered.

Call for Information

The Illinois State Police and the FBI are urging anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem after four decades, to come forward. The release of the ViCAP Alert is a procedural step used by the FBI to circulate details of violent and/or serial crimes to aid in solving complex cold cases.

Investigators believe that identifying anyone with information on the homicide or the events leading up to the discovery of her body is critical to solving the case.
