Columbus Day

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday celebrated on October 9 commemorating the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492. Over the last few decades however, this celebration has faced serious controversy due to Christopher Columbus’ various horrific acts against Native Americans throughout his life as an explorer. Because of this, many places in California, New York, Minnesota, Colorado, and more have transformed this holiday into Indigenous People’s Day. This day no longer has to be a painful reminder, but a positive symbol of how we’ve progressed and evolved. So, if you’re one of the lucky people who don’t have work today, now’s your chance to educate yourself on Native American culture and learn more about the origins of our nation!

LIHEAP Program Available to Assist Southernmost Illinois Residents with Heating Expenses

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible low-income households pay for home energy services (primarily heating during winter months).

Energy costs can place severe and continuing stress on a family’s budget. In some instances, households are forced to make painful decisions regarding which bills to pay and which necessities to survive without.

Illinois residents with a household income that does not exceed an amount determined annually by the Department of Commerce are eligible.

Annual eligibility levels are determined based on available funding and may not exceed 200% of the federal nonfarm poverty level.

All items must be at your normal pick up place and within 5 feet of the trash container. All Items should be bagged or contained – anything loose should be bundled so that it can be handled by one employee. Lumber will be picked up in small amounts only and must be stacked in 3’x3′ rolls. Carpet and padding must also be rolled in no larger than 3’x3′ rolls. Items that will not be picked up include: electronics, appliances, yard waste, hazardous or medical waste, construction and demolition debris, tires, batteries and paint cans (unless empty and dry).

Metropolis Trunk or Treat Set for Saturday October 28

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – The Metropolis Police Department extends a warm invitation to the community to join in the excitement of the annual Trunk or Treat event at Fort Massac State Park on Saturday, October 28.

The festivities will begin with a costume contest featuring participants from six different age groups, starting at 4:00 PM and concluding at 5:00 PM.

From infants to preschoolers, kindergarteners, and children in grades 1 to 4, everyone has a chance to showcase their creativity and compete for fantastic prizes.

After the costume contest, trunk or treating will take place from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, offering a delightful opportunity for children to collect treats and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

To secure a spot, participants can start setting up their displays around the museum area from noon onwards. Please note that spots will be claimed on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early to secure your preferred location.

For any inquiries or additional information, feel free to contact Chris McGinnis at Fort Massac State Park or Officer Travis Wilkins at the Metropolis Police Department. They will gladly assist you and provide further details about the event.

This is a free community event that promises an evening filled with entertainment. In addition to trunk or treating, attendees can enjoy music, kids’ games, face painting, and much more. Your participation is crucial in ensuring the success of this annual event within our community.

Brookport Distribution Location Change - In Need of Public Donations

Beginning October 12 the C.O.P.E. food pantry food distribution at Brookport will change locations. The dates and times of distribution will remain the second and fourth Thursdays from 9A-12P for now – however the foodstuffs will be distributed from the Christian Church building that is directly behind the Harry Statum gymnasium.

Also the number of patrons continue to rise and their donations are dwindling. Reserves of cash are disappearing rapidly . Their Holiday Bag program will cost approximately $5,000 just for the turkey breast and canned hams . Cash donations are needed badly. See more details here

The Massac County Farm Bureau Farmers Market Has Ended for the 2023 Season

... But you can still find our farmers locally until their season ends

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – The Massac County Farm Bureau officially ended the weekly Farmers Market at Dorothy Miller Park in late September – however local farmers will continue to make their produce available to the community until their growing season ends.

A popular spot for Massac County farmers to make their good available to the community is what many know as the “former Clark School lot” on East 5th Street.

Mr. Verbarg has told WMOK that he will set up on that lot throughout the end of his growing season. He currently has apples as well as other produce and recently told WMOK that he will soon have turnips.

All Massac County farmers are invited to let us know at WMOK what produce you have available and when/where your goods will be available.

90-Year-Old North Carolina Woman Sets Half-Marathon Record

How a millennial who quit her 9-to-5 job now has her former employer as a client — and makes more money

In 2021, Selene Da Silva was nervous to tell her employer — an independent hotel company where she felt like part of a family — that after working there since 2017 she was leaving to focus on her own business. But, instead of burning a bridge, she took the hotel on as a client.

While Da Silva worked as a marketing manager for the hotel company, she balanced two side hustles: She ran her business Selene Art & Design, which offers services such as photography and graphic-design work, and picked up jobs through the freelance site Fiverr. Today, she’s earning more than her salary at the hotel company, which Insider verified through documentation, and fulfilled her lifelong goal of being her own boss.

“I really enjoyed traveling and I always wanted to be completely independent, but as someone who had recently moved to the US it was just not possible for me,” she said, adding that she moved from Venezuela in 2017. “I didn’t know how to find clients.”

Now, her former employer is just one of her clients. Companies may work with freelancers and other independent workers if they lose talent after layoffs or need help during busy periods.

Fort Massac State Park has advised of the FORT MASSAC ENCAMPMENT SCHOOL DAY PROGRAM

First publishing – 9/5/23 – (WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Each year Fort Massac State Park hosts the “Grand Encampment”, a celebration of Fort Massac and America’s rich history. The Encampment focuses on the time period from the French and Indian war to the early 1800’s. Our Encampment School Day program, where volunteer re-enactors give presentations on the history of the area, will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023.

We recommend that buses arrive at 9am. The program will start at 9:30am and end at 2:00pm. Each group leader or teacher will be given a schedule for the day and is responsible for their group. Students may arrive after 9:30am and leave before 2:00pm if needed.

Merchants sell period items on a limited basis. Students are given an opportunity to go through the merchant’s row during their lunch period. There will be limited food vendors open on Friday.

Students should bring a sack lunch and enjoy lunch at the picnic tables in the food court or on the park grounds. Lunch break period will be 11:00am to Noon for students and re-enactors.

To ensure your school/homeschool can be included in the school day program, please register via email to sheryl.durham@illinois.gov or call Fort Massac State Park at 618- 524-4712 if you have further questions. When registering, please include teacher’s name, address, phone number, school contact person, email address, number of students and grade level. Also, please let us know of any special needs.

Although registration is not required to attend, we prefer that you please register on or before October 18, 2023.

You will receive a schedule when you arrive at the Visitor Center. Each station will be marked in front and will be on the map that you receive. Feel free to visit all of the stations. If a station is occupied, please move to one that is open and return later.

NOTE: ALL buses MUST enter the park through the marked entrance. Buses will be parked in a designated area at the Fairgrounds AFTER dropping off students.

ATTENTION

Buses will be allowed to drop off Teachers and Students at the main event area and then buses will be required to proceed to the designated parking area at the Fairgrounds. No buses will be allowed to park at any other location within the park.

It is recommended that all students bring their own lunch and keep within their backpacks Some food vendors will have food available to purchase.

If the school will be providing school lunches for all students, they will need to make arrangements to have those lunches brought to the food vendor location.

Teachers will be responsible for loading items back on the bus at the end of the day. Please DOUBLE CHECK your lunch area to verify that you have all lunch boxes, jackets, etc that students may have forgotten to pick up.

The folks at Joppa Maple Grove are reaching out to ask for bags of candy and two-liter bottles of soda for their Joppa Spirit Night. Those who help out will be entered to win a $30 gift certificate to Strickland’s Seafood Restaurant.

If you send in a bag of candy or two-liter bottle, you will be entered into a drawing for a $30 gift certificate for Strickland’s Seafood Restaurant. Every bag or bottle sent in equals a chance to win. If you send in two bottles and two bags of candy, you will be entered to win four times. Be sure you send a note with your donations so we know how many times to enter you into the drawing.

The drawing for the gift certificate will be held on October 16, so make sure to get the candy and soda here by then.

Also, make sure we have a way to contact you if you are the winner.

Elementary Beta Club will have our first meeting of the year on Wednesday, October 11, from 3-4pm in Mr. May’s room. Letters went home with students last week with details about the meeting. Please ensure that you have arranged for your Beta member to be picked up no later than 4:15pm outside of the gym lobby (normal pick-up area for all students). Johnson County Schools

Vienna Schools have advised that they have changed our grading periods.

In the past, they have done four report cards per our four quarters. Starting this school year (2023-2024), they are doing running semester grades.

So what does this mean?

Quarter grades will no longer be averaged together for a semester grade.

The grades will run continuously through the semester (August to December and January to May). Students will only receive two report cards/transcripts per school year now.

NOTE: Freshman Fundamentals contain four quarter classes, so these will be the only quarter grades given to students, and these grades will show on their transcripts.
