Sizzling in the Streets: Managing the Metropolis Mid-June Humidity

Whether you are matching strides with the caped crusaders out on Market Street for the Superman Celebration, checking out the local vendors at Dorothy Miller Park on Saturday, the amazing cars at Fort Massac on Sunday, or just going about your normal daily routine, you’ll want to take it easy this weekend. We have some heavy Massac County humidity, and that thick air can really take the wind out of your sails if you aren’t prepared!

For our friends and neighbors listening in Metropolis and Massac County Illinois and Beyond—as well as the thousands of guests visiting our town from all over the map—keeping an eye on the elements is key to staying safe.

Here is what our humidity forecast is looking like through early next week to help you plan your days:

  • Friday: A heavy 71% humidity levels with daytime highs stretching to 85°F.

  • Saturday: Staying sticky at 72% humidity with a high of 86°F.

  • Sunday: The air gets its thickest at 79% humidity while temperatures cool down a bit to a high of 77°F.

  • Monday: A welcome relief on the way as a northwest breeze drops the humidity down to a much more comfortable 60% with a high of 76°F.

Beat the Heat with These Quick Tips:

  • Hydrate early: Keep a water bottle handy and drink up before you feel thirsty.

  • Find AC: Take regular breaks to cool down inside air-conditioned spots.

  • Dress light: Wear loose, light-colored, breathable clothing to help your body stay cool.

  • Shift your schedule: Move any strenuous outdoor chores to the cooler morning or evening hours.

  • Check your neighbors: Keep a close eye on the elderly, your neighbors, and your four-legged pets.

Stay cool, take care of one another, and enjoy the weekend festivities!

Metropolis Kicks Off 2026 Superman Celebration with Emotional Honors at the Superman Statue

METROPOLIS, IL — Mother Nature tried to throw a wrench in the plans this morning.  That was followed by a power outage caused by a tree that had fallen into a transmitter.

Torrential rains and lightning cleared out and power was restored just in time Friday morning for the official opening ceremonies, held right in the heart of town at the iconic Superman Statue. The clearing skies set the perfect stage for a deeply moving presentation hosted by the Metropolis Elks Lodge #1428, where the community gathered to honor two local heroes who embody the true spirit of Metropolis.

The Lois Lane Award: Kathye Rose

Photo: Metropolis Elks

This year’s Metropolis Planet Lois Lane Award was presented at the statue to long-time Metropolis resident and Elks member Kathye Rose.

Much like the award’s namesake, Kathye is known for her fierce commitment, sharp dedication, and tireless work to support the local community. The surprise presentation caught Kathye completely off guard but delighted the crowd, who cheered for a hometown staple who has spent years working quietly behind the scenes for Metropolis.

The Man of Steel Award: Chad Lewis

Photo: Metropolis Elks

In a profoundly emotional moment under the shadow of the world’s most famous statue, the prestigious Man of Steel Award was awarded posthumously to Chad Lewis, honoring his extensive years of community service and unwavering dedication to the betterment of Metropolis.

The award recognizes individuals who show superhero-like strength in their service to others. It was proudly presented to Chad’s family: his wife, Jessica, and their two sons, Hudson and Holden. The presentation served as a powerful reminder of Chad’s lasting legacy and the indelible mark he left on the heart of the community.
