World Smile Day

The first Friday of October is World Smile Day (October 6), a relatively new holiday with a fascinating story. Created by a commercial artist named Harvey Ball, this day came about as a response to his creation of the smiley face. Harvey worried that the commercialization of the symbol would lessen its impact. We can hardly blame him for his estimation; the symbol has been used in many different ways including clothing, comic books, coffee mugs, pins, and more. These little yellow faces are more than just a symbol, they’re a statement about the power of smiling.

Fall Festivals Taking Place this Weekend in Southernmost Illinois

2023 Johnson County Fall Festival

Friday, October 6 from 5 – 9 pm on and Saturday, October 7 from 11 am – 9 pm. There will be activities and entertainment for all ages. The parade is scheduled for 10 am Saturday, October 7 as well as the first ever “Johnson County’s Got Talent” scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

2023 Golconda/Pope County Fall Festival

Sunday, October 8th. Enjoy a bounty of crafts, food, music, bouncy houses and the changing of the seasons on the historic courthouse lawn in Pope County. Come shop and visit with family and friends. Grab a bite to eat and stroll the Ohio Riverfront.

Use Caution Due to Parade Traffic in Vienna on Saturday Morning

This Saturday, October 7th 2023, beginning at 10:00 am is the annual Johnson County Fall Festival Parade through Vienna.

We have a few words in from Johnson County regarding traffic…

There will be road closures for the parade route throughout Vienna.

Please do not move any barricades that are set up on streets through town.

Please find an alternative route if you are travelling through Vienna that morning and please be patient.

Expect heavy traffic delays while the parade is underway and once the parade is over until traffic can resume back to normal.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – A date has been set for the 2023 Fort Massac Trunk or Treat. The Trunk or Treat will take place at Fort Massac State Park on Saturday October 28th.

Costume Contest at 4pm

Brookport Distribution Location Change - In Need of Public Donations

Beginning October 12 the C.O.P.E. food pantry food distribution at Brookport will change locations. The dates and times of distribution will remain the second and fourth Thursdays from 9A-12P for now – however the foodstuffs will be distributed from the Christian Church building that is directly behind the Harry Statum gymnasium.

Also the number of patrons continue to rise and their donations are dwindling. Reserves of cash are disappearing rapidly . Their Holiday Bag program will cost approximately $5,000 just for the turkey breast and canned hams . Cash donations are needed badly. See more details here

City of Metropolis Clean Up Week – All items must be at your normal pick up place and within 5 feet of the trash container. All Items should be bagged or contained – anything loose should be bundled so that it can be handled by one employee. Lumber will be picked up in small amounts only and must be stacked in 3’x3′ rolls. Carpet and padding must also be rolled in no larger than 3’x3′ rolls. Items that will not be picked up include: electronics, appliances, yard waste, hazardous or medical waste, construction and demolition debris, tires, batteries and paint cans (unless empty and dry).

The Massac County Farm Bureau Farmers Market Has Ended for the 2023 Season

... But you can still find our farmers locally until their season ends

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – The Massac County Farm Bureau officially ended the weekly Farmers Market at Dorothy Miller Park in late September – however local farmers will continue to make their produce available to the community until their growing season ends.

A popular spot for Massac County farmers to make their good available to the community is what many know as the “former Clark School lot” on East 5th Street.

Mr. Verbarg has told WMOK that he will set up on that lot throughout the end of his growing season. He currently has apples as well as other produce and recently told WMOK that he will soon have turnips.

All Massac County farmers are invited to let us know at WMOK what produce you have available and when/where your goods will be available.

Why Do We Say “Trick or Treat” on Halloween?

The origins of the phrase (indirectly) involve smelly cabbage, Donald Duck, and several Canadian journalists.

Each Halloween, hordes of costumed kids trudge from door to door exclaiming the same phrase at each stop: “Trick or treat!” It’s really a treat-only affair, since adults always shell out candy and children rarely have tricks up their sleeves (except perhaps for those dressed as magicians). In other words, they may as well save half a breath and simply shout “Treat!”

There was only one voice that stumped Mel Blanc

Mel Blanc is known as the Man of a Thousand Voices, but he makes each look easy. Apparently, looks aren’t deceiving, as Mel explained his creative process and his journey to find a character’s voice. He spoke to The Age, where he admitted that his vocalizations began at an early age. He said, “I used to do funny voices in assembly which got me a lot of laughs and a lot of lousy marks from the teachers.”

In fact, one teacher reportedly told Blanc, “When you grow up you’ll amount to nothing — just like your name.” While a harsh remark, especially for a child to hear, Blanc obviously didn’t let it break his stride on the road to success. However, he commented, “I just wish she was still around so I could remind her of it.”

People in the United States have been holding celebrations of Columbus since 1792, when the Society of St. Tammany, also known as the Columbian Order, commemorated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the “New World.” (Ironically, the Columbian Order appropriated language from the very peoples who suffered because of their eponymous hero: adopting a legendary Delaware chief as their patron and using titles like “brave” and “sachem” for their members.)
