Celebrating National Library Week and Right to Read Day

April 20th marks an important date for all book lovers and knowledge seekers as National Library Week is underway.

This special week is a time to recognize the incredible work that libraries and their dedicated staff do to transform lives and strengthen our communities. Libraries are much more than just places to borrow books; they are vibrant hubs where learning takes place, connections are made, and everyone finds a sense of belonging.

This year, National Library Week aligns with Right to Read Day, a significant occasion that encourages us to stand up against censorship and fight for our freedom to read whatever we choose. Organized by the American Library Association, Right to Read Day aims to bring communities together to combat the increasing trend of book bans and the censorship of ideas.

One of the key moments during Right to Read Day is the announcement of the 10 most challenged books from the previous year. This list shines a light on the disturbing rise in censorship within our libraries and schools, reminding us all of the ongoing battle for intellectual freedom. By discussing these challenges, we can encourage each other to open up conversations about the importance of having access to diverse ideas and information.

As we celebrate National Library Week and Right to Read Day, let’s remember how vital it is to protect our right to read freely. Libraries and librarians are invaluable resources in our towns, and they work hard to ensure that everyone has access to a wide variety of materials. Now, more than ever, we need to uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and make sure every voice in our community can be heard.

This week, visit the Metropolis Library, check out a new book, or just have a visit to learn what they have to offer.

Together, we can ensure that every story is shared and every individual has the opportunity to explore new ideas. Join in the celebration of our libraries – they are truly at the heart of our communities!
