Tiny's Christmas Challenge

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Time is running out to give to Tiny’s Christmas Challenge for Project Hope.

Tiny the Chihuahua who has issued the challenge to animal lovers far and wide has sadly passed away of natural causes at around 17 years old since last year.

This caused Tiny’s owner to raise the stakes in Tiny’s Christmas Challenge. The goal amount for the challenge was raised this year to $10,000 from $5,000 due to the passing of Tiny.

Earlier in December WMOK spoke with Susan Howell of Project Hope to learn more about how close they are to their goal and to let us know how we can help.

Howell told WMOK that they are only a bit short of the $10,000 goal, which Tiny’s owner will match.

Today is...

Boxing Day

Boxing Day is a centuries-old gift-giving day that originated in Britain.

During the Victorian era (1837–1901, the period of Queen Victoria’s reign), the upper class would box up leftover food, money, or goods and give them to their tradesmen as well as their servants for reliable service all year.

One of the earliest records of these box gifts dates from 1663. In an entry in his diary, English Parliamentarian Samuel Pepys writes that he sent a coach and messenger to his shoemaker to deliver “something to the boys’ box against Christmas” in addition to funds to cover his bill.

The custom arose because servants, who would have to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, had the next day off. They were given gifts from their masters and would go home to visit their families.

In the church, the money in the Alms (charity) boxes was given to the poor. The church parishioners deposited donations into a box the clergyman put out for that purpose and handed it out at Christmas.

Happy Hearts
Technology Time
with WMOK

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – We’ve been receiving more texts from you Happy Hearts learners following our gathering this week and we are thrilled!  WMOK will return to Happy Hearts Senior Center on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 10:45A for Technology Time.

We’re going to include some things here that we have covered in our sessions.  We’ll recap on what we’ve done and add additional info to help you hone up your skills.

Moving toward Christmas – Please text us at 618-524-9209 ((you can also “reply” to your “Yellow Sheet Text” – just jot us a little note or a big one and recap for us what you have learned and what you still have questions about.

One of the items we mentioned when we last met was “finding and following fun things on Facebook” –

When you’re on Facebook later search for “American Memory Lane” – on your smartphone touch the “magnifying glass” in the upper right hand of the screen and in the blank that appears type in American Memory Lane.  If you enjoy the page you will see a “like” or “follow” button.  Touching that button will cause the page and it’s posts to show up in your “Facebook Feed”.

Experiment with it and let us know how it goes!

Other pages we enjoy that following that you can investigate:

Mental Floss – Home for all things curious, including surprising facts; answers to life’s big questions; and untold –  Repeat the steps above at Facebook and search for Mental Floss.  If you enjoy it and would like to see it show up in your Facebook feed click “like” or “follow”

We’re going to set up a few small group sessions between now and when we restart at Happy Hearts in January.  If you would like to set up a small group – just text and let us know at 618-524-9209.
