Extreme Heat Warning Issued Across the Region Through Saturday Evening

WMOK – Metropolis, IL –

The National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky, has extended an Extreme Heat Warning for all of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, and southeast Missouri. The warning remains in effect until 8:00 PM CDT on Saturday as a prolonged period of dangerously high temperatures and humidity continues to impact the area.

Forecast details and safety guidance provided by weather officials include:

  • Expected Conditions: Peak daily heat index values are projected to reach between 103 and 109 degrees, with actual high air temperatures ranging from 95 to 101 degrees daily.

  • Duration: Unusually high temperatures—roughly 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal normals—will persist throughout the week. Overnight lows in the mid-70s will offer little relief heading into the holiday weekend.

  • Health Impacts: The prolonged heat and excessive humidity significantly elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

  • Recommended Precautions: Residents are advised to stay hydrated, remain in air-conditioned environments, limit strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours, wear lightweight clothing, and check on relatives and neighbors.
