WMOK – METROPOLIS, IL — Progress continues on the new Metropolis dog park, providing local pet owners with a dedicated, secure area for their animals. During a recent Metropolis City Council meeting, officials and local residents discussed updates on construction materials, funding, and public safety enforcement.
Alderman Short informed council members and attendees that the dog park project is moving forward, confirming that Hometown Hardware currently has the fencing ready for installation.
Project Scope and Funding
The approved off-leash dog park will measure 100 by 200 feet and is set to be located directly north of Dorothy Miller Park along the riverfront.
The project is being financed through a combination of grant money and local tax funding:

Placemaking Grant: Secured from the Egyptian Chapter of the Mid-Illinois Realtors Association.

Resident Raises Safety Concerns
The status update was highlighted by safety concerns raised by a local resident regarding loose animals in the community. She recounted a recent incident at Sixth and Metropolis Streets where her mother had to use pepper spray to ward off two loose dogs—described as a large German Shepherd and a brindle Pitbull—to prevent an attack while walking her own dog. Neither her mother nor her dog were physically harmed during the encounter.
The resident expressed deep concern, noting she has been attacked at least seven times since moving to Metropolis, making a enclosed, dedicated dog park essential for walking her pets safely.
Animal Control Officer John Roman responded to the scene at Sixth and Metropolis Streets, though the resident noted no formal report had been filed to her knowledge. Alderman Short assured her he would check into the animal control response.
City Council Clarifies Penalties for Loose Dogs
Following the resident’s account, Alderman Koch raised questions regarding local enforcement and the financial penalties for owners who allow their pets to run at large.
Corporate Counsel clarified the city’s current penalty structure:
Fines for dogs running loose in Metropolis begin at $100.00 for a first offense and can reach up to $750.00 depending on the circumstances and repeat violations.
