Superman Celebration Logistics: The View from the Sheriff's Office

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – The upcoming Superman Celebration brings incredible energy to Metropolis, but for the Massac County Sheriff’s Office—situated right on Superman Square—it also requires some careful logistical planning. Sheriff Chad Kaylor shared a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep operations running smoothly while the town is packed with festival-goers.

Here is how the department navigates the celebration:

  • The Ultimate Perk: On the bright side, Sheriff Kaylor admitted that having the entire lineup of Celebration food vendors right outside on Market Street is a massive “pro” for the staff.

  • Traffic Challenges: On a more serious note, with the square officially blocked off to regular traffic, coming and going from the office for routine patrols or emergency calls can be challenging.

  • Courtroom Coordination: The department also has to watch the local court docket very closely during the festivities. Safely transporting defendants from the jail to the courthouse takes extra coordination and vigilance when the streets are filled with so many visitors.

Hear the Sheriff explain these festival adjustments in his own words, check out the full audio clip in the SoundCloud player below.
