Massac County State’s Attorney to Hold Press Conference Regarding a 1984 Death Investigation

METROPOLIS, IL — The Massac County State’s Attorney’s Office has announced a press conference scheduled for this afternoon, April 24, 2026, regarding a 1984 Death Investigation.

While officials were unable to confirm any information regarding confirming the topic when we spoke with them earlier this morning, WMOK has independently confirmed that the topic of today’s press conference will be the 1984 Cold Case of the death of Lisa Carnes in Massac County.

The announcements this afternoon will follow a significant push for information that began last year. In 2025, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP) alert in a renewed effort to bring resolution to the decades-old crime. The ViCAP alert is a procedural tool used by federal authorities to circulate details of violent or serial crimes, helping investigators solve complex cold cases by reaching a wider audience.

Background on the 1984 Homicide

Lisa Ann Carnes was 26 years old when she was tragically murdered in the spring of 1984. Her body was discovered on March 30, 1984, in a rural field south of County Road 1150 N and east of US 45 in Massac County. An autopsy later determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest, with investigators also noting signs of blunt force trauma.

While the case has remained unsolved for over 40 years, today’s development suggests new information for the long-standing investigation.

How to Follow the Developments

The Illinois State Police and the FBI continue to urge anyone with information, even details that may seem insignificant, to come forward.

WMOK will provide live coverage of the State’s Attorney’s press conference this afternoon via WMOK Facebook Live. A comprehensive update and summary of the proceedings will also be featured during the WMOK Afternoon News Check at 5pm.

National Arbor Day is a holiday dedicated to planting and celebrating trees.

Origins & History

The American holiday was founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, a journalist and later U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, in Nebraska City, Nebraska.

First Celebration: On April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted across Nebraska.

National Status: By 1920, over 45 states and territories celebrated the day. President Richard Nixon officially recognized it as a national holiday in 1970.

The Birthday Connection: For many years, the date was April 22nd to honor Morton’s birthday before it was moved to the final Friday of April.

National Historic Marker Day is an annual service-oriented event held on the last Friday of April (April 24, 2026) to encourage communities to clean and care for local historic markers.

Created by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation in 2021, this initiative promotes the preservation of over 227,000 markers across the U.S.. Volunteers can sign up to clean, take photos, and celebrate local history.
