(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – An 11 year old Metropolis girl was air lifted to a St. Louis hospital this afternoon following being struck by a vehicle at 10th and Ferry Streets in Metropolis. 

The incident happened around 3pm on Friday just after school had dismissed for the weekend.  The girl was transported to St. Louis via helicopter from Massac Memorial.  As we wrap our “Yellow Sheet” (approaching 7pm) we have learned that learned that the young lady has made it safely to St. Louis.  We have also been advised that she is conscious and alert.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – WMOK spoke with the Massac County Sheriff’s Department this afternoon to follow up on a wreck that took place at Macedonia Church Road and Highway 45 this morning.  

At around 7am Massac EMS, Massac Fire, Metropolis First Responders, Massac County Sherriff’s Office and Illinois State Police were toned to a three vehicle accident at Macedonia and Highway 45.  

Two vehicles and a semi were involved – with one of the vehicles being pinned beneath the semi. 

As emergency responders arrived at the scene they found the driver of the vehicle beneath the semi to be entrapped and suffering from head injuries – however the driver was conscious and alert.

Air-Evac was dispatched within minutes from Sikeston, Mo with an ETA of around 30 minutes.  Wreckers and ambulance arrived at the scene and staged nearby while awaiting the driver to be extricated.

The driver of the vehicle which was pinned beneath the truck was transported via ambulance from the scene.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Just after we finished the WMOK Morning Show and 10am News Check on Thursday morning we learned in the newsroom that a Massac County Landmark was in the process of being torn down and debris removed.

The building – Veach’s – has been known in the community for decades. The building has set at 5570 South U.S. 45 Road in Massac County.  Tho few would be able to give those numerics – everyone in Massac County knew Veach’s.

We’ve included photos below that we took on Thursday as Quint Excavating cleared the debris.

Sunshine Protection Act – Remains Stalled

A Sunshine Protection Act was proposed in 2021 and US Senate unanimously approved that act in 2022.  Although it unanimously passed the Senate it didn’t make it past the House of Representatives and was not signed into law.

A 2023 version of the ACT has remained idol in Congress as well

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – After the excitement of Halloween fades away, you may wonder what to do with your used jack-o’-lanterns.

Instead of tossing them into the trash, consider these eco-friendly options.

First, composting is an excellent choice. Remove any candles or non-organic decorations and break the pumpkin into smaller pieces. Mix it with other compostable materials like leaves and grass clippings to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.

Alternatively, you can feed wildlife by placing the pumpkins in a secluded area of your yard. Squirrels, birds, and other critters will appreciate the tasty treat.

Another creative option is to repurpose them as planters. Cut off the top, scoop out the flesh, and fill the pumpkin with soil and flowers or herbs. This adds a touch of autumn charm to your home.

Lastly, consider donating your jack-o’-lanterns to local farms for animal feed. Many farmers gladly accept pumpkins as a nutritious supplement for their livestock.

With these ideas, you can give your pumpkins a second life while minimizing waste.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Massac County Supervisor of Assessments Gary Hamm has advised of upcoming reminders that homeowners will want to be aware of.

November 6th is the last day to file an appeal for the 2023 assessment year.  You can file your appeal through the assessments office (1 Superman Square RM 1A, Metropolis) or by emailing garyhamm@massaccountyil.gov

Hamm also advised that splits and combinations requested after the date of July 31st 2023 will not be completed until the following assessment year.   He asks that folks are mindful of this in their home closings.
