WMOK – Metropolis, IL – Massac County is officially on the hunt for its next County Engineer. The county board has opened the application process for the full-time leadership role, which directs the upkeep and improvement of local roadways and infrastructure across the region.

Reporting directly to the County Board of Commissioners, the incoming County Engineer will supervise the Massac County Highway Department. The department currently includes ten AFSCME employees—comprising a mechanic, six operators, and three truck drivers—alongside a non-union Maintenance Supervisor and a non-union bookkeeper. Operating under a County Unit Road District structure, the department is responsible for maintaining 68 miles of county highways and 321 miles of township roads.
Candidates interested in the position must meet the minimum qualifications set forth in 605 ILCS 5/5-201 and hold a current, valid registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois. Applicants should also bring significant, progressively responsible experience in civil and highway engineering, strong familiarity with IDOT and FHWA policies and procedures, and practical supervisory experience working with a variable workforce.
Key responsibilities for the role include managing finances such as the County and Township Motor Fuel Tax programs, preparing plans and specifications for bridges, culverts, and road overlays, overseeing the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) program, and presenting resolutions and budgets to the County Board.
Massac County participates in the State of Illinois County Engineer Salary Program, with a salary range commensurate with experience and qualifications.
