Days Getting Shorter as Massac County Heads Toward Autumn

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – If you have noticed the evening light slipping away just a little bit sooner while sitting out on the porch, you are not imagining it. Late August is officially doing its thing, and the daylight hours across Metropolis, Joppa, Unionville, and up on the bluff in New Columbia are steadily shortening.

For today, Friday, August 28, the sun will set tonight at 7:30 PM, bringing another warm late-summer evening to Massac County. If you are out and about early on Saturday morning, expect daybreak just after 6:00 AM, with sunrise landing right at 6:20 AM.

As we roll through these final days of August, we lose nearly two minutes of daylight every single day. Tuesday marks September 1st—the official start of Meteorological Fall—and early risers will quickly notice those increasingly dark starts to their mornings.

Whether you are heading out early to beat the heat, planning an evening outdoor dinner, or catching the twilight breeze down near the river, keep those shifting times in mind as we slide into September.

Metropolis Lions Club Invites Local Participation and Sponsors for 2026 Labor Day Parade

WMOK – METROPOLIS, IL —

METROPOLIS, IL — The annual Labor Day Parade is set to return on Monday, September 7th, and the Metropolis Lions Club is calling on area businesses, civic groups, and community organizations to get involved.

Whether marching in the procession, entering a float, or showing support behind the scenes, local group involvement helps make the tradition a highlight of the season for folks listening in Metropolis and Massac County Illinois and Beyond.

New Band Competition Feature

This year’s festivities include a brand-new addition to the lineup. In partnership with Massac County Band Director Gavin Hayes, the Metropolis Lions Club is introducing a judged competition for all participating bands. Top performers will be recognized with special prizes.

To support the addition, the Lions Club is seeking local sponsors to help cover the funding for the band prize funds. Businesses and organizations that step up as supporters will have their logos displayed on a banner right at the judges’ stand during the parade.

Community members, local leaders, and business owners looking to participate in the parade or sponsor the band competition can reach out directly to the organization.

Massac County Court Update: Hearing Held in State of IL vs George E Bradfield

METROPOLIS, IL — Proceedings continued Tuesday morning in Massac County Circuit Court regarding the first-degree murder case against 76-year-old George E. Bradfield.

Bradfield entered the courtroom Tuesday alongside other detainees from the Massac County Detention Center. The court cleared routine cases via Zoom and standard docket calls before officially taking up the Bradfield matter. Upon being called to the defense table alongside attorney Cervantez, Bradfield’s defense counsel formally requested that his hand shackles be removed.

During the in-person hearing, the court addressed the State’s Rule 404(b) motions, which concern the potential admissibility of evidence regarding other crimes, wrongs, or acts. Special Prosecutors Stratemeyer and Robinson represented the State during the arguments. Following presentations from both sides, the judge reserved ruling on the 404(b) motions.

Additionally, defense counsel took up a motion seeking permission to inspect specific evidentiary materials in the case. The State raised no objections to the request, and the court granted Attorney Cervantez access to review the items.

Bradfield faces first-degree murder charges in connection with the 1984 death of Lisa Ann Carnes following his arrest in Owensboro, Kentucky, in late April. He remains held at the Massac County Detention Center.

The court established two upcoming court dates for the case:

Pre-Trial Conference / Case Management: Set for September 1, 2026, at 9:00 AM via Zoom.
Follow-up Pre-Trial Conference: Scheduled for October 27, 2026, at 9:00 AM in Courtroom 1.
