WMOK – Metropolis, IL – This week marks Be Kind to Humankind Week, an annual observance that runs every year from August 25th through August 31st. It serves as a gentle reminder for all of us to slow down, lend a hand, and show a little extra grace to our neighbors.
This year, however, the start of Be Kind to Humankind Week carries a heavy heart for country music fans right here in Southern Illinois and around the globe. On Tuesday, August 25th, the world lost an absolute treasure when Dolly Parton passed away.
While our hearts are heavy, there is perhaps no better way to honor Dolly’s memory than by fully leaning into the spirit of this week.
Dolly Parton was the very definition of unconditional kindness. From giving millions of books to young children through her Imagination Library to lifting up those in need without a second thought, she showed us what it looks like to live with a generous spirit and a servant’s heart.
As we move through the rest of Be Kind to Humankind Week and into the coming months, let’s make a point to continue to shine her light of absolute goodness right here in our home town:
- Offer a Warm Smile: Whether you are in line at the grocery store or passing folks on the road, a small gesture can change someone’s whole day.
- Help a Neighbor: Reach out to someone who might need a hand with chores or just a friendly visit.
- Support Local Children: Consider donating a book or supporting local literacy, carrying on the spirit of Dolly’s favorite cause.
- Speak with Grace: Choose encouraging words over harsh ones, on the airwaves, online, and at the dinner table.
Dolly Parton proved that kindness is a force that can bridge any divide. Let’s keep her legacy alive in Massac County by taking that extra step to be good to one another today and every day.
