Demolition of the Sweetwater Saloon

Earlier in May, Main Street Golconda announced the long-awaited work on the Sweetwater Saloon was about to begin. Many residents had the opportunity to watch the demolition take place through Facebook videos.

However, some residents expressed their disappointment that the façade of the building was not preserved.

Officials had initially advised that they would attempt to save the façade, but this part of the plan could not be executed due to safety concerns.

The City of Golconda stated that the demolition company did an exceptional job and they would recommend their services to anyone, emphasizing that their work was impeccable.

The city also noted that Main Street Golconda made the best decisions possible given the circumstances at the time.

For those interested in getting involved with the next stages of the project, you are encouraged to attend the monthly meetings, which are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.

These meetings take place in the Main Street Golconda office, located next to the hardware store.

National Etiquette Week

National Etiquette Week is currently being observed from May 11–15, 2026. This annual recognition focuses on the importance of courtesy, respect, and social protocol in all areas of life, including business, social, and digital interactions.

The “tenets” of etiquette (often called the three pillars) are designed to make people around you feel comfortable. While rules change with the times, these three foundations remain constant:

1. Consideration
    • Think of others first: Anticipate how your actions affect those around you.
    • Minimize Disturbance: Be mindful of your noise level, space, and timing.
    • Show Empathy: Understand that everyone has different needs and boundaries.

2. Respect
    • Value Time: Be punctual for meetings, dates, and social gatherings.
    • Active Listening: Give people your full attention without checking your phone.
    • Honor Differences: Acknowledge diverse backgrounds, opinions, and personal space.

3. Honesty
    • Be Sincere: Offer genuine compliments and apologies, not just empty words.
    • Kind Truth: Share information truthfully but without being intentionally hurtful.
    • Integrity: Follow through on your promises and commitments.

National Bike to Work Week

National Bike to Work Week 2026 runs from Monday, May 11, to Sunday, May 17, 2026. This week is a centerpiece of National Bike Month, an event established in 1956 by the League of American Bicyclists to promote the health, environmental, and financial benefits of cycling.
🚲 Key Dates for 2026
    • National Bike to Work Week: Monday, May 11 – Sunday, May 17.
    • National Bike to Work Day: Friday, May 15.
    • National Bike to School Day: Wednesday, May 6 (occurred earlier this month).

Why Participate?
    • Health & Wellness: Regular cycling improves cardiovascular health, reduces stress, and boosts mental well-being.
    • Financial Savings: Maintaining a bike costs roughly $300 annually, compared to over $8,000 for a car.
    • Environmental Impact: Swapping a car for a bike for just one trip can cut CO2 emissions by up to 67%.
    • Traffic Reduction: Twelve bicycles can fit into the parking space required for a single car, helping to ease urban congestion.

Tips for a Smooth Commute
  • Plan Your Route: Use local bike maps or apps like the Google Maps cycling layer to find low-stress paths and protected lanes.
  • Bike Check: Before riding, check your tire pressure, ensure your brakes work, and make sure your chain is lubed.
  • Gear Up: Wear a helmet and use lights if riding near dawn or dusk. Consider adding a cargo rack or basket to carry your work bag.
  • Office Prep: Keep a spare set of clothes at work or roll them in your bag to prevent wrinkles.

Twilight Zone Day

Weird Stuff You Might Not Know
    • Garden Talk: Serling didn’t type his scripts. He paced his backyard and talked into a recorder. That’s why the dialogue sounds so poetic and punchy.
    • Narrator by Accident: Serling wanted a professional news announcer for the voiceover. When that fell through, he did it himself and became an icon.
    • The Missing Theme: Season 1 didn’t have the famous four-note guitar riff. It used a fancy, orchestral score that sounded more like a classic movie.
    • Future Stars: Before they were legends, actors like William Shatner, Robert Redford, and Leonard Nimoy were all just faces in the Zone.

The show works because it’s not just about monsters; it’s about us. As long as people are a little bit afraid of the dark, the Twilight Zone will never go out of style.
