Bradfield Denied Pre-Trial Release; Investigators Seek Leads: Bradfield was an Iron Worker at Missouri Portland in Joppa, IL in 1984

WMOK – Massac County, IL – Following a detention hearing on Wednesday, a judge has denied pretrial release for George E. Bradfield, citing significant concerns regarding community safety and the risk of the defendant fleeing prosecution regarding charges in the 1984 Massac County Cold Case death of Lisa Carnes.

The Illinois State Police (ISP) and local law enforcement are maintaining an active investigation into this case and the activities of George E. Bradfield. Authorities are urging anyone with information—no matter how small or seemingly insignificant—to come forward.

In reviewing our notes at WMOK from Wednesday’s hearing, we have some information that may help you jog your memory banks.

In 1984, Bradfield was an iron worker at the Missouri Portland Cement plant in Joppa, driving daily between Harrisburg and Joppa.

Investigators are looking for anyone who encountered George Bradfield during that time. Maybe you were his neighbor in Harrisburg, his coworker at the plant, or you just remember a face from the commute.

  • Key Evidence Presented:

    • DNA Analysis: Forensic results from two laboratories indicate a strong probability match between Bradfield and material recovered from three distinct points at the original crime scene.

    • Inconsistent Statements: While Bradfield initially claimed he had no physical contact with the victim, the court noted that the DNA findings directly contradict these assertions.

    • Flight Risk: The prosecution presented recorded phone conversations between the defendant and his son as evidence of a potential intent to evade prosecution.

  • Trial Timeline:

    • Pre-Trial Conference: May 26, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

    • Jury Trial: Scheduled to begin July 14, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

Monday Evening Wreck on Irvin S Cobb Bridge

WMOK – Massac County, IL – Just after 6pm on Monday evening the Irvin S Cobb Bridge, better known locally as the “Brookport Bridge” was closed for around an hour and a half due to a collision on the bridge.

It was quite a crash for the Brookport bridge as four vehicles involved.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department has advised WMOK that there were no charges were filed against any of the drivers.  We’ve not yet received a response from the Paducah Police.
