Massac County Sheriff's Office Takes Custody of George E. Bradfield in 1984 Murder Case

WMOK – Metropolis, IL – George E. Bradfield, 76, has been transferred into the custody of the Massac County Sheriff’s Office following his court appearance in Daviess County, Kentucky, on Monday. During the proceedings, Bradfield waived his right to extradition, facilitating his transport to Illinois.

Sheriff Chad Kaylor confirmed to WMOK that Bradfield arrived at the Massac County Jail just after noon today. He is facing five counts of murder in connection with the 1984 death of 26-year-old Lisa Ann Carnes.

The investigation into Carnes’ death took a significant turn when the Illinois State Police, alongside the FBI, utilized advanced DNA testing on evidence preserved from the original crime scene. This forensic breakthrough reportedly linked Bradfield to the victim. At the time of the incident, Bradfield was working in Joppa.

Looking ahead, Massac County State’s Attorney Josh Stratmeyer told WMOK that Bradfield’s first court appearance is slated for 9:00 a.m. this Thursday.

During this hearing, the charges against him will be formally read, and legal representation will be confirmed.

Additionally, under the Pretrial Fairness Act, a separate hearing will be conducted to determine whether Bradfield will remain in custody throughout the legal proceedings.
