Massac County Solar Project Hearing Draws Significant Public Interest

WMOK – Massac County, IL – Last night, residents gathered at the Massac County courthouse for a public hearing regarding a proposed commercial solar energy facility that would span over 5,100 acres across Massac and Johnson counties in southernmost Illinois. The portion of the project located in Massac County is set for an unincorporated area approximately two miles east of Belknap.

The hearing witnessed a significant turnout from residents, indicating strong community interest in the project.

For those who are new to the topic, it is important to understand the various components of this process.

Although the land may be leased and preliminary surveys completed, the project cannot advance without a special use permit approved by the Massac County Board of Commissioners. Illinois law mandated that last night’s public hearing take place, allowing residents to provide testimony, ask questions, and voice concerns prior to a final vote.

It is crucial to clarify that no vote was made during the hearing; a decision is expected at an upcoming meeting of the Massac County commissioners, which will be reported on as more information becomes available.

For those interested in watching the proceedings, a video of the hearing is available below. The opening remarks begin at 14 minutes and 40 seconds into the video, led by Massac County Commissioner Jayson Farmer, then transition to public hearing facilitator Rick Abel, followed by the SB Energy proposal.

Notably, the video reaches a turning point at the 40-minute mark, where public testimony on sound issues begins. Residents engaged fully during this segment, and many took the opportunity to voice their opinions.

WMOK is actively monitoring comments on last night’s Facebook Live video, and viewers are encouraged to share their questions and comments. We will continue to gather and respond to inquiries as this story develops. Expect more coverage on this topic in the coming days.
