(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Every December, Wreaths Across America (WAA) brings together communities to honor military veterans by placing live evergreen wreaths on their graves. Founded in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, who aimed to pay tribute to veterans he admired, this initiative has evolved into a national movement.
The mission of WAA is threefold: to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and educate the next generation about sacrifices made by our veterans. On National Wreaths Across America Day, observed on the second or third Saturday of December, volunteers nationwide participate in wreath-laying ceremonies at over 2,000 locations.
Volunteer involvement is crucial to WAA’s success, as millions gather to lay wreaths and connect with their communities. The program also partners with schools to foster educational outreach, teaching students about patriotism and respect for those who served.
The visually striking wreaths, adorned with red bows, symbolize the blood shed by servicemen and women. Each ceremony is a heartfelt tribute where names are read, and stories of bravery are shared.
