Memorial Day on Monday

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Memorial Day is one week from today. Often thought of as the beginning of Summer the meaning of Memorial Day has nothing to do with grilling hamburgers or packing to take a vacation.

What is Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on the last Monday in May. It is a day to remember and honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces

Metropolis Events – Memorial Day Service
Monday, May 27 – Veterans’ Memorial Park – Next to the Metropolis Library

Memorial Day is also considered the beginning of Summer Fun

The Metropolis City Pool is opening its gates on Memorial Day, May 27th, and will be open from noon until 7. The pool will remain open throughout the Summer until its final day on Saturday, August 10th, with hours from noon until 5.

The Metropolis and Massac County Farmers Market is in full swing. Metropolis and Massac County Farmers Market takes place on Saturdays from 7A-12P. It takes place at Dorothy Miller Park on East Front St, overlooking the beautiful Ohio River, the park with the lighthouse.

In larger events, the Superman Celebration is scheduled for June 7-9.

For 45 years, the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce, City of Metropolis and the Greater Metropolis Convention & Visitors Bureau have hosted the Metropolis Superman Celebration.   What started as a 1-day event for the local community has grown into a 4-day extravaganza celebrating all things Super and welcoming fans from around the globe.

The Matthews Pro/Am Archery Tournament is scheduled for June 27-30 in Metropolis, Il. This event is a part of the Archery Shooters Association (ASA) Pro/Am tour and will feature professional and amateur archers competing in various divisions.
