Metropolis Public Library - May is Amnesty Month

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – When WMOK spoke with Metropolis Public Library Interim Director Colby Kennedy regarding Amnesty Month; he emphasized the importance of reconnecting patrons with library materials, saying “It’s most important to have the book and the patron back in the library.”

May is Library Amnesty Month, and the library is waiving and working with patrons concerning fines for returned overdue items.  Amnesty Month allows a chance for patrons to start fresh and reintroduce themselves to the library’s resources. By welcoming patrons back and recovering overdue materials, the library aims to create a positive and inclusive environment for the entire community.

Director Kennedy advises that they want folks to come in and bring the materials.  He stressed to our listeners, “These things happen – they’ve happened to me.  We’re not going to yell at you or embarrass you.”  Kennedy also stated that after the overdue book is checked back into circulation they’ll be happy to set patrons up with a new card so they can start fresh.

“May is Amnesty Month at public libraries nationwide! This means that patrons can return overdue library materials without facing fines or penalties. The goal of Amnesty Month is to encourage people to return borrowed items and restart their library experience with a clean slate. So, dig out those long-overdue books and DVDs and return them to your local library without fear of fines. Let’s celebrate the joy of reading and sharing resources!”
