A New Happy Hearts Senior Center is on the horizon in Metropolis

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – One of the things our Massac County senior citizens can look forward to in the coming year is a new space in which they can socialize.

Metropolis Mayor Don Canada has been telling us for some time on WMOK’s Coffee Brek program about changes that have been underway due to the declining condition of the current Happy Hearts building at 7th and Market Street in Metropolis.

Mayor Canada told us in November that a lot of work was underway; such as bathroom renovations to make things ADA Accessible, work on plumbing lines, work on the office space and construction of an industrial kitchen.

Hear our conversation with Metropolis Mayor Don Canada in the Soundcloud player below:

Metropolis Superman Statue Rings in 2024

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – If you were on Market Street over the New Year’s weekend you may have noticed New Year’s glasses on our Superman statue.  The accessory was orchestrated by Metropolis City Council Woman, Michele Longworth.

Many local residents will recall that Michele made a pair of glasses for the Superman statue back in 2017 for the “Great American Eclipse”.   Michele told WMOK over the weekend that it struck her as she was on Market Street that Superman needed New Year’s glasses.  She said she looked back at her measurements from the solar eclipse glasses and went to work.

Approval needed to be made by the Metropolis Chamber and some other entities.  Everyone communicated on their phones to approve the glasses with the only problem remaining being how would the glasses get on Superman on a holiday weekend.

That’s where Michael Gentry came into the unfolding of events.  Mr. Gentry was on call this weekend for the City of Metropolis Electric Department and when contacted, was happy to use the bucket truck to affix the glasses on Superman in preparation for New Year’s Eve.

2024 Brings New Laws in Illinois

More than 300 new Illinois laws take effect as the New Year begins. They cover a wide range of topics – public health, public education, drug education, pet adoptions, minimum wage increase and more.

The minimum wage increase goes into effect in Illinois with a minimum wage increase to $14 per hour for non-tipped workers, $8.40 per hour for tipped workers and $12 an hour for youth under 18 working less than $650 per calendar year.

Fentanyl education is on the forefront with House Bill 3924.  This requires high schools to teach about the dangers of fentanyl in all state-required health courses.

Video conferencing while driving is now punishable by law.

Book Bans have been banned.  House Bill 2789 is the first in the nation law prohibiting state-funded libraries from banning or removing materials due to religious or partisan disapproval.

if the heat is on so is your gas and electric House Bill 1541 prohibits utility companies from cutting off gas or electric services for Illinois residential users due to non-payment on days when the temperature exceeds 90° or when there is a heatwatch advisory or warning.

Smoke free means vape free house bill 1540 expands the state’s law to keep public spaces smoke-free.  Under this new law use of electronic cigarettes or vapes is prohibited in public spaces and within 15 feet of building entrances.

Promoting Pet Safety: Observing National Pet Travel Safety Day

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – National Pet Travel Safety Day, observed on January 2nd, serves as a crucial reminder of the potential dangers associated with unrestrained pets in vehicles.

This day aims to raise awareness about the importance of pet travel safety and educate the public about the risks involved in allowing pets to roam freely in cars. Unrestrained pets can pose serious threats to both themselves and their human companions, including the risk of injury or death in the event of a sudden stop, swerve, or accident.

To ensure the safety of pets during travel, it is recommended to use proper restraints such as harnesses, crates, or carriers designed specifically for pet transportation. Additionally, frequent breaks, access to water, and never leaving pets unattended in a vehicle are essential practices for safe pet travel. By observing National Pet Travel Safety Day, pet owners can prioritize the well-being of their furry friends and promote responsible and secure travel practices for pets everywhere.
