National Sandwich Day
Celebrated annually on November 3, National Sandwich Day is one of our favorite holidays. The sandwich is believed to be the namesake of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, following the claim that he invented the first ever sandwich. As one of America’s most popular lunch items, this day gives us a great reason to enjoy a sandwich.

Friday Morning Wreck Results in Entrapment
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – WMOK spoke with the Massac County Sheriff’s Department this afternoon to follow up on a wreck that took place at Macedonia Church Road and Highway 45 this morning.
At around 7am Massac EMS, Massac Fire, Metropolis First Responders, Massac County Sherriff’s Office and Illinois State Police were toned to a three vehicle accident at Macedonia and Highway 45.

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – Just after we finished the WMOK Morning Show and 10am News Check on Thursday morning we learned in the newsroom that a Massac County Landmark was in the process of being torn down and debris removed.
The building – Veach’s – has been known in the community for decades. The building has set at 5570 South U.S. 45 Road in Massac County. Tho few would be able to give those numerics – everyone in Massac County knew Veach’s.
We’ve included photos below that we took on Thursday as Quint Excavating cleared the debris.

Make Good Use of Pumpkins Upon Disposal
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – After the excitement of Halloween fades away, you may wonder what to do with your used jack-o’-lanterns.
Instead of tossing them into the trash, consider these eco-friendly options.
First, composting is an excellent choice. Remove any candles or non-organic decorations and break the pumpkin into smaller pieces. Mix it with other compostable materials like leaves and grass clippings to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.
Alternatively, you can feed wildlife by placing the pumpkins in a secluded area of your yard. Squirrels, birds, and other critters will appreciate the tasty treat.
Another creative option is to repurpose them as planters. Cut off the top, scoop out the flesh, and fill the pumpkin with soil and flowers or herbs. This adds a touch of autumn charm to your home.
Lastly, consider donating your jack-o’-lanterns to local farms for animal feed. Many farmers gladly accept pumpkins as a nutritious supplement for their livestock.
With these ideas, you can give your pumpkins a second life while minimizing waste.

More on the Life of Ron Howard
(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – One of the many pages that we follow on Facebook here in the newsroom is Do You Remember. Do You Remember is full of “eye candy” to take you on a trip down memory lane.
This morning we noted something interesting about Ron Howard on the Do You Remember Facebook feed – and having just shared in the #WMOKGenGap section last week that Ron Howard’s wife had never seen The Andy Griffith Show when they started going out we thought you might enjoy a little more on the story…
Cheryl met Ron Howard in high school but had never had the pleasure of meeting Opie Taylor.
The two met when they were still young, but even then, Howard was considered a celebrity due to his work on Happy Days and The Andy Griffith Show. Surprisingly enough, Cheryl had actually never seen The Andy Griffith Show by the time she and Ron had met. In fact, Ron’s fame may have actually hurt his chances with Cheryl rather than helped. In an interview with The Charlotte Observer, Cheryl said, “Besides, my father, who rented apartments to actors, didn’t have a high opinion of the whole profession.” As such, Cheryl had adopted her father’s perspective on actors.
From American Memory Lane – Rosie’s, first established in the 1940s in Little Ferry, New Jersey, used to be called the Silver Dollar Diner. Bounty paper towel filmed commercials in it in the 1970s starring a waitress named Rosie, hence the change in name.
