Today Is

National Cherry Turnover Day

National Cherry Turnover Day is celebrated annually on August 28 in the U.S. This is the perfect time to celebrate this dessert as it is almost the end of summer and people are still going outdoors for picnics or camping — so cherry turnovers make a great food item to carry along. A cherry turnover is a puff pastry that is stuffed with cherry filling and then baked until it turns golden brown. There are many variations to this dish but the classic remains a favorite.

Community Participation Encouraged in
Labor Day Parade One Week from Today

The Metropolis Lions Club has been proudly organizing the Labor Day Parade for numerous years, serving as a celebration of the labor movement and featuring the participation of local unions. However, in recent times, the parade has been lacking representation from these unions.

To address this, the Lions Club is actively reaching out to a broader range of participants.

They are cordially inviting businesses, churches, government officials, schools, clubs, farmers, 4-H clubs, and anyone else who wishes to be recognized to join in the festivities.

The Labor Day Parade is scheduled to commence one week from today at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 4.

WMOK recently spoke with Maxine Russell of the Metropolis Lions Club and recognizing the importance of community support she urges everyone to come together and participate in the Metropolis Labor Day Parade.

On Labor Day at 9am parade lineup will begin at the Massac County Courthouse.  The parade will proceed up East 5th Street to Fort Massac State Park.

For those interested in obtaining more information or participating, please contact Jones at 618-559-6085 or Russell at 618-534-3058.

Benefit Dinner to Be Held for Anistyn Goins to Assist in Medical Care

Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse invites the community to join us for a spaghetti benefit dinner on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 4 PM, located at 111 E. 3rd St. in Metropolis to support Anistyn Goins.  Anistyn is the daughter of Natalie (Davis) Goins and Jerron Goins.

Anistyn’s journey began on July 24th when Natalie noticed decreased fetal movement and was rushed to labor and delivery. Due to complications, she was flown to Vanderbilt University Hospital for specialized care. At just 23 weeks and 6 days gestation, Anistyn was born weighing 1lb 1oz and measuring 11 3/4 inches. While she is currently stable, Anistyn has a challenging road ahead.

Your participation in this benefit dinner will help alleviate the financial burden on Natalie and Jerron as they navigate Anistyn’s medical journey.

Generation Gap

R.I.P. Bob Barker, ”The Price is Right” and ”Truth or Consequences” host and animals rights activist

He guest-starred on Bonanza, advocated for spaying and neutering pets, and refused to host a beauty pageant due to their use of fur. The long-time game show host was 99.

Bob Barker, known for hosting the game shows The Price is Right and Truth or Consequences, has passed away.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, after a decade on the radio, Barker was named host of the nationally televised Truth or Consequences in December 1956 and stayed with that program through 1975.

In his career, Barker garnered 15 Emmy awards. He was presented a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999 and was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame five years later.

Barker generated buzz when he refused to dye his hair in 1987 due to the animal products used in hair dyes, The same year, he declined to go on as host of the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants after learning about the contestants wearing animals skins.

You may know his animal activism more from his famous closing line on each episode of The Price is Right, which he hosted from 1972 to 2007, “have your pets spayed or neutered.”

Barker trained as a Navy fighter pilot during World War II, though he did not serve on active duty. He found his true calling as a host when during his tenure at a radio station, one staffer failed to show up at the last minute and he did his first audience-participation show. It was an instant spark.

At 32 years old, Barker got an audition for Truth or Consequences. The show went on to become the No. 1 show on daytime television and then went on five times a week in syndication.

In 1998, upon the taping of the 5,000th episode of The Price Is Right, CBS dedicated Stage 33 at CBS Television City as the Bob Barker Studio.

Barker had a good sense of humor and could poke fun at himself, and found a brand new generation of fans when he appeared on the Adam Sandler movie Happy Gilmore, playing himself — and beating up Adam Sandler during a celebrity golf tournament. (At one point, Sandler yells “The price is wrong!” after slugging Barker… which Barker more than returns.) “Nobody had heard of Adam Sandler until I beat him up,” Barker teased. He and Sandler won the 1996 MTV Award for best fight.

Though Barker is known for his game show roles and activism, he did appear on a handful of other TV shows, including Futurama, How I Met Your Mother, and Bonanza where he guest-starred in 1960.

Barker was 99 when he passed.

Poor Reception: 10 Wildly Inaccurate Predictions About Television

On April 30, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt became America’s first reality television star. The commander-in-chief broadcast a message from his podium at the World’s Fair in New York. While it wasn’t the first-ever TV program, it was one of great significance: At the time it aired, only a handful of television sets were in use. Roughly two decades later, 90 percent of American homes had a television, and the country’s love affair with screens was firmly established.

Technology Tips for Beginners

As we get into week number two of our tips we want you to keep replying to your “WMOK Yellow Sheet” text – you can request songs, say hello, ask a question or any little thing your heart desires..  This is a great way to communicate and we want to encourage you to practice – even if it’s just saying “hello”

Lesson for the week

Text with your family and friends!

Some of you may already have text messages in your inbox from family and friends what have texted you.  They may have been there for a while – but let’s metaphorically blow them off and reply.

  1. Choose a text to which you want to reply and navigate to it – on a flip phone using your arrow buttons and then selecting the “ok” or “enter” button – on a smart phone touch the message to which you want to reply
  2. Navigate to the empty box at the bottom in which you will type.  on a flip phone use your arrow buttons and then select “ok” or “enter” – on a flip phone touch the empty box at the bottom of your screen.  On either type of phone it may have the words “message” in the box in which you are to type – it is also possible that it is an empty white box.
  3. Begin typing your message.  You might start with something like “Learning to text”.  This gives them an alert so to speak that they may receive odd messages from you as your learn.  We ourselves have received them here at WMOK and we love them because it lets us know you’re practicing and learning!
  4. When you have typed everything you wish to type – send the message.  You are most often looking for either the word “send” to the right hand side of where you were just typing or sometimes a little ‘icon’ (picture) that looks like a paper airplane. Navigate to or touch that to send the message.
  5. After you have sent the text – use your ‘back’ buttons to navigate to the list of all of your text messages.  You should see the one you just sent at the top.
  6. Continue to the next unanswered text and reply.

We look forward to planning another technology presentation at the Happy Hearts in September on the 21st at 10:45am!  We hope you’ll make plans to attend and bring a friend!
