Heat Remaining Excessive into Friday and Possibly Lingering into Saturday – Cooling Shelter at Massac County Courthouse to Remain Open on Friday

WMOK checked in with Beau Dodson Weather in Massac County today and he advised that we can expect it to be hot and muggy into at least tomorrow and possibly lingering into Saturday.  Beau went on to say that a cold front will bring isolated to widely scattered storms Friday into Sunday.  Beau said – The cold front will usher in cooler and drier air Sunday into next week.

We spoke with Massac County EMA Director Brian Horn this afternoon to follow up on the status of the cooling shelter at the Massac County Courthouse and he told WMOK that the shelter will be open available again of Friday from 8am until 4pm.  The Massac County Courthouse located at 1 Superman Square in Metropolis.

Those planning to utilize the cooling shelter will need to enter through the main entrance on the east side of the Courthouse.

Residents outside the City of Metropolis that are in need of transportation to the cooling center are encouraged to contact the Massac County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number for assistance: (618) 524-2912.

On August 14 Metropolis Officers were called to a residence on Hospital Drive for a disturbance and found the victim who had a bloody nose and other minor injuries.

Offices learned that 32 year-old Tayler A Stewart of Metropolis had struck her and tried to steal her car.

Stewart was in violation of an order of protection which prohibited him from being at the residence.

Ron Howard on what it would take for him to return to acting

The former child star is happy behind the camera now, but there’s one thing that would get him back in front of it.

These days, Ron Howard is a powerhouse of a director with two Academy Awards, four Emmys, two Golden Globes and a slate of movies that have been box office hits and critical darlings. It seems like he was always destined for success.

However, in the early days of his career, people were doubtful of a child star stepping behind the camera. Actors directing is nothing new, but an actor becoming a critically-acclaimed, Oscar-winning director is much less common.

“I don’t know that it was actively frowned upon, but people were skeptical about that being my dream,” Ron Howard said on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast in 2022. “It was like I was from anywhere in the country wearing that T-shirt, ‘what I really want to do is direct.’ Actors would direct once in awhile… but they wouldn’t commit themselves to it. And they didn’t come from TV sitcoms, and they certainly hadn’t been child actors who then make this their career.”

When ‘Woody Wagons’ Ruled the Road

Cars with wood panels used to be a luxury ride, with only the wealthy opting in.

Not even Clark Griswold takes as much abuse en route to Walley World as the “Wagon Queen,” the station wagon carrying his family from Chicago to California in 1983’s National Lampoon’s Vacation. With its pea green chassis and wood paneling, the Queen was so viscerally revolting that the movie is credited with ushering in—or at least symbolizing—the demise of the all-family vehicle.

But for over a decade, these clunky automobiles were a common sight on highways. And many of them sported a now-inexplicable feature: faux wood grain exterior paneling. Cars that looked like stereo speakers on wheels were the aesthetic choice for many, and the mere mention of them evokes visions of a dashboard crammed with 8-track tapes and cigarette lighters.

They even earned an appropriately kitschy nickname: “woody wagons.”

Technology Tips for Beginners

Our first step into this learning adventure was WMOK’s presentation on Wednesday of last week at the Happy Hearts Senior Center in Metropolis.  This week we’re working with our “Happy Hearts Technology Beginners” on “Replying to Texts”.

We invite anyone who wishes to learn to follow our lessons here –

We’re going to continue our first lesson here in the Yellow Sheet with replying to some of your messages.

Lesson for the week
practice replying to the text with WMOK

Play with it and experiment – we at WMOK are the only ones who will see these messages and it is our goal to help you learn – after you have typed something you are ready to send your message.

You can say “hello” to us – request a song – or ask us anything your heart desires.

As you continue to practice this week – work on replying to the text messages in your inbox.

We look forward to planning another technology presentation at the Happy Hearts in September.

‘Biggest, brightest’ rare blue supermoon can be seen Aug. 30

(NewsNation) — People will get a glimpse of an extremely rare blue “supermoon” next week, with outlets reporting it’s set to be the “biggest and brightest moon” this year.

This blue supermoon can be seen the night of Aug. 30. InTheSky.org predicts the supermoon will rise at 7:10 p.m. ET (2310 GMT) and set at 6:46 a.m. ET (1146 GMT) on Aug. 31.

Observers on the ground may notice a slightly larger moon at this time, but only by about 7%, Space.com writes. Saturn will also be especially bright that night, as the gas giant will be at the point where it lies directly opposite the sun as it is seen from Earth.

Those in New York City can see Saturn in the constellation Aquarius, which is above and to the right of the moon, while those in the Southern Hemisphere can see the planet right below the moon.
