DAY ONE – Today and Tonight – Thunderstorms are possible early this morning over parts of southeast Missouri. Some flash flood risk may develop through early this morning.

Another round of thunderstorms is forecast to form tonight over southeast Missouri and possibly parts of southern Illinois. Heavy
rain and flash flooding are a threat.

DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN – Wednesday through Monday – Daily chances for thunderstorms are in the forecast from Tuesday through Sunday. The focus will generally be in the overnight into the morning hours through Thursday night. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding will be possible each night.

More organized thunderstorms are possible Sunday as a stronger storm system approaches. This system may pose a severe weather and flash flood risk.

From the WMOK News Room

(WMOK) Metropolis, IL – We’ve made it into the ’80s and we look for a high in the upper 80s this afternoon.

The National Weather service of Paducah has issued some outlooks – a hazardous weather outlook they issued just after 2:30 this morning in which they advised that a round thunderstorms is forecast for tonight over Southeast Missouri and possibly parts of Southern Illinois.  They say heavy rain and flash flooding are a threat.  They advise of storms later on through the week as well as a hydrologic Outlook – a multi-day rain and thunderstorm threat poses a flash flood risk.

We spoke with Beau Dodson Weather this morning on Coffee Break.  He advised of that we do need to be aware of the incoming storm systems this week.

Beau expects tonight’s storms to move primarily through Southeast Missouri and possibly clip Southwest Illinois.   Expectations for precipitation with tonight’s front – “two to four and maybe up to five inches”.

Beau says tomorrow night is when concerns increase for a heavier rain event.  He advises that Wednesday night’s storms could drop as much as three to six inches of rain in some counties – perhaps more in some bands.

Beau explained that we can expect scattered thunderstorms at any given point Thursday and another storm complex forming Thursday night into Friday morning.

Beau further explained that if these storms track over the same areas repeatedly – those areas will need to be aware of flash flooding.

Beau went on to discuss the importance of not driving through flood waters.

In the extended outlook – Beau is tracking storm systems for Sunday.

Beau reiterated that while some severe storms can be expected that he feels our concerns at least for the next couple of days will be flash flooding.

25 Big Facts About Pee-wee Herman

In 2014, Paul Reubens spoke with Mental Floss about the creation of Pee-wee Herman, his beloved comedy character.

On July 30, 2023, the entertainment world lost a pop culture icon when Paul Reubens passed away at the age of 70 after a private battle with cancer.

In the summer of 1985, Reubens introduced America’s youth—and millions of young-at-heart adults—to a new brand of comedy when his slim suit-loving, bow-tied alter ego Pee-wee Herman stormed the box office with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. Over the next four decades, Reubens’ beloved character conquered every corner of the entertainment industry with two movie sequels, one Saturday morning television series, and a Broadway show.

In 2014, Reubens—an enthusiastic Mental Floss reader—helped us uncover 25 things about Pee-wee Herman.

1. Pee-wee Herman began life as a Groundling.

Pee-wee Herman “came about from an extended improv at The Groundlings,” Reubens told Mental Floss of the character’s origin. “We were just given an assignment to come up with a character that one might encounter in a comedy club and I came up with Pee-wee Herman.” Pee-wee’s first stage appearance was in 1977.

Where flooding has become more frequent, here’s how gardeners can respond

Water is essential to plant life, but what happens when there’s too much of a good thing, as has been the case in many parts of the country and the world this summer?Extreme rainfall is more frequent now, atmospheric scientists say, as storms form in an atmosphere made warmer by climate change. In the garden, too much water can have fatal consequences, says Nick Goltz, director of the UConn Plant Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut. “ Flooding deprives roots of oxygen, which leads to root-rot diseases, and then plants can’t pull water up (and) through their leaves and vascular tissue.”

WMOK Yellow Sheet Reader Poll #1 - WMOK News Listening Habits

The WMOK News Check has been covering Metropolis and Massac County news for decades.

In the beginning – 1951 – folks listened on 920am

In what we estimate to be the 1980s the WMOK Yellow Sheet was first produced.  The “Yellow Sheet” was a sheet that could be picked up throughout Metropolis at area businesses.  It contained Metropolis and Massac County News.

As technology allowed – an email subscription list was developed for the “Yellow Sheet”.  That list continued to grow from the 1990s when it first began and though we are in a transition phase with that list – we continue to take subscribers – email wmoknews@frontier.com and put “Yellow Sheet” in the subject line.

We added a “text subscription” option in June of this year.  We invite to you to text “Yellow Sheet” to 618-524-9209 to subscribe.

Entering a new era – now nearly 72 years after our station first took to the airwaves in Massac County, we want to get a vibe on how our current consumers gather news from WMOK so that we can continue to improve your experience.

We’ve included a few options below with which we hope to learn how you “most often” get your WMOK News – Please pick any options that apply to you.
