City of Metropolis requests the assistance of property owners in identifying the type of service line running to their home’s internal plumbing

/ WMOK

The City of Metropolis requests the assistance of property owners within the city in identifying the type of service line that they have running to their home’s internal plumbing.

There are four types of piping: Lead, Copper, Galvanized and Plastic.

The information is needed following a Federal Government mandate that requires the City of Metropolis to identify where Lead services are located so that they can begin the process of eliminating them.

Lead unlike other drinking water contaminants – is usually not present in the drinking water source. It results from the distribution system or on-site plumbing itself. Lead gets into water at the tap when water corrodes lead in pipes, fixtures and solder.

The most impactful way to reduce the risk of exposure to lead in drinking water is to remove the lead service line that brings water to homes from the water main in the street.

To report to the City of Metropolis what type of water service line you have visit their website www.metropolisil.gov – scroll down to “Resources for Residents” and click “Lead Service Line Survey”.  Mayor Canada told WMOK that there is an option for “unknown” on the survey.  If you unsure of what type of piping you have – select unknown and a city employee will come out to determine which kind you have.
If you know what kind of pipe you have but are unable to submit the online survey – please call the Metropolis Mayor’s Office at 618-524-4016
Mayor Canada joined WMOK for Coffee Break and gave us the full details on the project – Hear our discussion below:
