WMOK recently spoke with Abbey Kaylor and Mallory McVey on Coffee Break about Massac County Sports. Mallory McVey, Lady Patriots Golf Head Coach and Abbey Kaylor, Lady Patriots Golf Assistant Coach spoke with us about this past sports season as well as the upcoming season. Mallory Gentry McVey has been the head coach for two years and Abbey Kaylor is now her assistant coach.
McVey told WMOK that the Lady Pats Golf team had a very impressive history. The Lady Pats Golf team has won 25 Conference Championships in the last 27 years along with many other titles. She said that with golf being an outside sport, it wasn’t as affected as some of the indoor sports during COVID-19 but being one of the first sports that is played in the beginning of school, golf was sort of thrown right into the pandemic. Golf is a fall sport and it was played in the fall last season and as far as actual play, not that much changed. However they did notice a few things such as the players limited what they came in contact with, and no food or drink was allowed on course including water and had a limited number of players allowed in the clubhouse at one time.
Abbey Kaylor spoke about the changes in sports that were made last season due to the pandemic. Kaylor told WMOK that one of the biggest things was the basketbll season. Usually played in the spring time, basketball was instead held in the winter. Along with all the players having to play while wearing masks and taking mask breaks, there was for the most part no fans allowed or at a very limited capacity. McVey and Kaylor said all the kids derserve a great deal of praise for how they handled themselves and the sport being played. The kids played, following new rules and regulations, and did an amazing job.

In Lady Patriot Golf, the Massac County Lady Patriots proved that they not only take care of business on the golf course, but in the classroom as well. After winning a regional championship and finishing third in the sectional in the fall, the Lady Patriots earned the IHSA’s Academic Achievement Award–an award based on team grade point average. The entire 14-player Massac County team posted a GPA of 3.98 for the first two quarters this school year. The IHSA recognizes teams with a 3.0 GPA and above for this award.
Catching up with Lady Patriot Softball, just a couple of hours after suffering a heartbreaking, 1-0 loss to eventual state champion Rockridge in the semifinals, the Massac County Lady Patriots bounced back to take care of Tolono (Unity) 5-1 to win the 2A Third Place Game. The Lady Patriots finished 25-3 on the season. Earlier in the semifinal game, Rockridge scored a run in the first, and freshman pitcher Kendra Lewis made it stand up. Lewis held the Lady Patriots to one hit, striking out 11 while walking five. Massac County did have several chances, but wound up leaving seven runners on base for the game. Rockridge finished 29-0 and state champion after defeating Joliet Catholic 4-0 in the title game.The IHSA made changes to the state series format in baseball and softball due to the pandemic, with the semifinals and trophy game being played on the same day. The venue was new too, as the softball state games have moved from the Eastside Centre in East Peoria to the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria.

Football practice for 9th grade through 12th grade starts Monday, August 9th at 1:00pm at the high school.
Included in Governor JB Pritzker’s announcement of a mask mandate for all kids in schools was another update to the IDPH All-Sports Policy. Now everyone, regardless of vaccination status, is required to wear a mask for indoor sports. This includes players, coaches, officials, game personnel, and fans. The mask rule also includes winter or spring sports having open gyms, conditioning, or weightlifting indoors.
Currently there are no schedule or fan capacity limitations, and this new directive is only for indoor sports. Outdoor sports will not be required to mask, regardless of vaccination status.
