WMOK heard from Vienna High School Principal, Joshua Stafford on Friday.
He advised on the current number of cases of Covid-19 within Vienna High School as of Friday August 20, 2021.
-17 current cases with staff and students
-23 close contacts
-20 out of the 23 close contacts have opted for the “test to stay option” which means that instead of those individuals having to quarantine they are staying in school as long as they test negative on days 1, 3, 5, and 7.
-Out of those 20 that have opted for the “test to stay program” Vienna High School has only had 1 individual test positive. This means that they have 19 individuals that have been able to stay in school for in person learning and activities. Whereas, without a “test to stay option” all 20 of those individuals would have had to quarantine for two weeks and miss school and activities.
Principal Stafford told WMOK, “”We have had a great return to school this year. Students and staff are back and excited to take on a new school year. One resounding theme that we have heard from all stakeholders in our county is that they want to have in-person learning. We were able to achieve that outcome last year and had over 90% of our students in person five days a week for the entire school year. We are working for the same outcome this year.”
Mr. Stafford said that in regard to masking issues, they have had very few. He said, “One of my mentors once told me that it is important to keep the main thing the main thing. There are a lot of things that can distract us from the main thing, but the folks in our community have been focused on getting students back to class, activities, and athletics while working to minimize anything that serves as a distraction to that.”
