When WMOK spoke with Metropolis Animal Control and Abatement Officer, John Roman about how to help our pets in the summer heat John advised of two very important things pet owners need to do. Pet owners must make sure that their pet has proper shelter from the sun, food and plenty of fresh clean water throughout the day.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET IN A HOT CAR – Officer Roman stated that if your vehicle is running with the air on and you’re only gone for a short time then that is okay; however he stressed that it takes mere minutes for a vehicle to become dangerously hot.
Roman advised WMOK that if they see or receive a call that an animal is in an unattended vehicle that is turned off and that animal is in distress due to the hot car, they will not hesitate to break a window or whatever they have to do to reach that animal in distress and get them medical attention.
If you have an outside pet, make sure that they have a shady place to get out of the sun and where it’s a little cooler. Also remember to get them fresh cool water often (put an ice cube in it to keep it cooler longer).
