Continuing Golden Rule Week

Ancient Roots: The principle dates back centuries, appearing in the teachings of Confucius, the writings of Ancient Greece, and nearly every major world religion.

Continuing the Practice of the Golden Rule

  • Offer a Sincere Compliment: A kind word to a coworker or a stranger at the grocery store can be the moment that turns their entire day around.

  • Practice Active Listening: Give someone your full attention without checking your phone or planning your response; being truly heard is one of the greatest gifts you can give.

  • Support Local Volunteers: Whether it’s a food pantry or a community garden, offering a few minutes of your time helps the heart of our community beat a little stronger.

  • Be the “Patient Driver”: When you see someone trying to merge into traffic on the Brookport Bridge or I-24, create a gap and wave them in with a smile.

  • Express Gratitude: Take a moment to thank a local clerk, teacher, or first responder for what they do for those of us across the county.

  • Share a Positive Story: Instead of passing along a grievance, share a bit of good news with someone you meet today—kindness is just as contagious as a smile.

Stress Awareness Month is observed annually in April. It is a time to raise awareness about the impact of stress on mental and physical health, and to promote strategies for managing stress effectively.

Metropolis Mayor Discusses Ongoing Cleanup Efforts

In a recent Coffee Break episode, listeners tuned in to an engaging conversation with Metropolis Abatement Officer John Roman about the intricacies of Administrative Warrants. The conversation highlights the vital role of local authorities in maintaining community standards and ensuring public safety.

Building on that discussion, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to speak with Metropolis Mayor Gregg Jeffords just last Thursday. Mayor Jeffords shed light on the ongoing cleanup efforts in our city, detailing the initiatives being implemented to restore and rejuvenate Metropolis.

Date Set for 1940's Steele Wings Swing Dance

The Heroes of Massac Endeavors (HOME) has officially announced the return of their signature fundraising event.

The Steele Wings Swing Dance is set to take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

This 1940s-themed evening serves as a key benefit for the construction of a statue honoring Metropolis native and WWII paratrooper John Marvin Steele, along with a memorial for all Massac County WWII fallen heroes.

What to Expect

#LiveBigBand Music: The evening typically features a full orchestra (past years have featured Steve Shininger & The ShinSings) playing authentic 1940s standards.

#Vintage Attire: Attendees are encouraged to dress in their finest 1940s costumes. Trophies are traditionally awarded for the “Best Dressed Gal,” “Best Dressed Guy,” and “Best Dance Duo.”

#NostalgicAtmosphere: The event often includes period-appropriate hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and vintage photo opportunities to transport guests back in time.

Community Impact: All proceeds go directly toward the John Marvin Steele Statue and #WWIIMemorial project.
