National Awkward Moments Day

National Awkward Moments Day is observed annually on March 18. It is a lighthearted day dedicated to acknowledging and laughing at the cringeworthy, embarrassing, or socially uncomfortable situations that everyone experiences as part of being human.

Global Recycling Day

Global Recycling Day is an annual initiative held on March 18 to recognize the vital role of recycling in preserving the planet.

For 2026, the official theme is “Don’t Think Waste – Think Opportunity,” focusing on the economic and environmental potential of reimagining waste as a valuable resource.

The Seventh Resource

The term “Seventh Resource” was coined to elevate recyclables to the same level of importance as the Earth’s six primary natural resources:

Primary Resources: Water, air, coal, oil, natural gas, and minerals.

The Seventh Resource: Recyclable materials (paper, plastic, metal, glass, and textiles).

Recognizing these materials as a resource highlights their ability to supply approximately 40% of the world’s raw material needs and save over 700 million tonnes of emissions annually.

Recycling Heroes

“Recycling Heroes” are individuals, communities, and businesses nominated globally for their extraordinary efforts in promoting sustainability and innovative recycling practices.

Recognition: Every year, the Global Recycling Foundation awards official “Recycling Heroes” with cash prizes (ranging from $250 to $1,000 USD) to support their environmental work.

Impact: These heroes include anyone from local teachers starting school composting programs to startups inventing new ways to recycle complex textiles.

Global Recycling Day 2026 Focus

The 2026 campaign emphasizes the circular economy, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible. By shifting from a “take-make-waste” model to seeing “opportunity,” the initiative aims to unlock an estimated $4.5 trillion in global economic growth by 2030 through resource reimagination.

This specific model was the first to house the motor entirely inside the handle, making it a “one-handed” device compared to his earlier, bulkier prototypes that required an external motor.
