I-24 Bridge Construction: Heads up, commuters! While all lanes on the I-24 Ohio River Bridge are currently flowing normally following a brief closure due to a barge strike earlier this week, a major traffic shift is on the horizon.
Phase 2 of the bridge rehabilitation project is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 2, weather permitting. To accommodate the work, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Initially, you’ll see temporary barriers being placed; once prep work is complete, all traffic will be shifted into a “head-to-head” configuration on the westbound lanes so that the eastbound side can be completely overhauled.
Expect these lane restrictions to remain in place through October 13.
Enjoy the smooth crossing while all lanes are open this week!

Carnival Rides Make a Joyful Return to Superman Celebration 2026
The Superman Celebration in 2026 marks the triumphant return of carnival rides, a long-awaited feature since the pandemic. Following COVID-19, many smaller carnival companies were forced to close, leaving limited options for bookings.
Monica Williams Obermark from the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce worked tirelessly to revitalize the event, attracting more local visitors from Massac and surrounding counties.
With the rides returning, excitement is building for this beloved celebration.
Maggie Rzechula, Metropolis Chamber of Commerce President joined us on WMOK’s Coffee Break Program to discuss the details:

Shawnee National Forest Earns Conservation Education Award at NWTF Convention
WMOK – Metropolis, IL – The Shawnee National Forest was honored with the prestigious Conservation Education award during the National Wild Turkey Federation’s (NWTF) 50th annual Convention and Sport Show, sponsored by Mossy Oak. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to conservation education, partnerships, and wild turkey management.
The Shawnee National Forest earned recognition for its Wheelin’ Sportsmen Hunt, which marked a significant achievement in promoting awareness and opportunities for disabled veterans. Forest Service representatives Dennis Wilson and Justin Dodson, along with NWTF volunteer Michael Howie, were acknowledged for their efforts in organizing a successful inaugural turkey hunt for four disabled veterans, three of whom were able to harvest a turkey.
This initiative was made possible through collaboration between the Illinois NWTF State Chapter, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Forest Service, and the Illinois Chapter of The Fallen Outdoors, a nonprofit focused on connecting veterans with nature’s therapeutic benefits.
Michael Howie, the NWTF Illinois state Wheelin’ Sportsmen coordinator, expressed gratitude for the recognition: “Seeing the work the NWTF did to build the turkey population back up was awesome. We’re very humbled to win this award. I’m amazed and very honored.”
The NWTF also presented awards in additional categories, recognizing the vital contributions of other projects and individuals, including the Partnership Achievement Award to the Boise National Forest and Eldorado National Forest, as well as individual awards to Cecily Mui for the Advancing Shared Stewardship Award and Kelle Reynolds for the Dena Holmes Collaboration Award.
About the National Wild Turkey Federation: Since 1973, the NWTF has invested over half a billion dollars into wildlife conservation, positively impacting over 25 million acres of critical wildlife habitat. In recent years, the organization has dedicated over $2.3 million to wild turkey research, raising more than $22 million for effective population management. The NWTF continues its mission through collaborative efforts aimed at fostering healthy forests, wildlife habitats, clean water, and robust recreational opportunities.
Today in History:
On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became a national hero as the first American to orbit the Earth. Aboard the Friendship 7 capsule, Glenn circled the globe three times in just under five hours, reaching speeds of 17,500 mph. Despite a terrifying sensor malfunction involving a potentially loose heat shield during re-entry, Glenn landed safely in the Atlantic. This pivotal Mercury program success restored American confidence during the Space Race, proving the U.S. could finally rival Soviet achievements and reach for the moon.

I-24 Work Beginning Soon: Motorists Encouraged to Plan Ahead
WMOK – Metropolis, IL – Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse, alongside Chief Tolbert, participated in a meeting regarding the I-24 bridge construction held at the Kentucky Transportation Headquarters in Paducah. During this meeting, key details were shared about upcoming work and traffic management strategies.
Beginning March 2nd, eastbound lanes of I-24 will be closed, with traffic being diverted to a head-to-head setup on the westbound side.
A jersey wall will separate the opposing flows of traffic to ensure safety. Motorists should expect to see traffic diverted just west of the bridge and merging back to the eastbound side just to the east of the bridge. Chief Masse advised that traffic control measures will follow similar protocols to those implemented last year.
Chief Masse raised concerns during the meeting regarding the possibility of converting one lane on the westbound side of U.S. 45. However, transportation officials declined this request, citing safety studies indicating that maintaining ramp traffic prior to the lane closure is more secure.
In addition to the bridge construction updates, Chief Masse noted that our rest area will go out for bid in June, with plans to shut down for approximately two years. This closure may affect travel plans for many drivers.
Furthermore, a request for additional “no parking” signs on the ramps was denied, as the existing signage complies with the standards set forth by the National Highway Safety Administration.
Officials anticipate that the current phase of bridge work will be completed by October 13th. This timeline coincides with the second weekend of the upcoming encampment, which is scheduled for the 10th and 11th, potentially leading to increased traffic congestion during this busy period.
As work progresses on the I-24 bridge, local drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and plan their routes accordingly to accommodate the changes in traffic flow.
