Carnival Rides Make a Joyful Return to Superman Celebration 2026

The Superman Celebration in 2026 marks the triumphant return of carnival rides, a long-awaited feature since the pandemic. Following COVID-19, many smaller carnival companies were forced to close, leaving limited options for bookings.
Monica Williams Obermark from the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce worked tirelessly to revitalize the event, attracting more local visitors from Massac and surrounding counties.
With the rides returning, excitement is building for this beloved celebration.
Metropolis Welcomes Home Miss Cosmo International 2025: Yolina Lindquist: Celebrated for Global Success and Academic Excellence

METROPOLIS, IL — The “Home of Superman” is currently celebrating a hero of a different kind. Metropolis native Yolina Lindquist has returned to Massac County following her historic victory as the newly crowned Miss Cosmo International 2025.
Yolina’s journey from Massac County High School to the international stage in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, has captivated the local community. On December 20, 2025, she made history as the very first American to win the Miss Cosmo title, surpassing contestants from over 70 countries.
A Record of Leadership
While many know her from the pageant circuit—where she previously served as Miss Metropolis Outstanding Teen and was the first runner-up at Miss Illinois USA 2025—Yolina’s impact goes far beyond the crown.
Her advocacy platform, “Courage Over Cancer,” is a deeply personal mission inspired by her family’s own battles with the disease. Through this initiative, she has raised over $20,000 for cancer research and continues to focus on patient outreach and fundraising as a central part of her international reign.
Excellence in the Classroom
Yolina’s dedication to her roots is matched only by her academic drive. A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale, she accomplished the rare feat of earning four Bachelor’s degrees simultaneously in:
-
Marketing
-
International & Financial Economics
-
German
-
International Trade
During her time as a Saluki, Yolina didn’t just study; she led. She served as the president of six student organizations and was named the 2025 Outstanding Senior in Economics.
Hometown Celebration
The community officially welcomed Yolina back this past Sunday with a homecoming event at The Space on Market Street. The celebration included a tour of local landmarks, from the Hope Lighthouse to the Superman Statue, proving that no matter how far her travels take her, Yolina remains a proud daughter of Metropolis.
As she begins her year of service as Miss Cosmo International 2025, Yolina Lindquist continues to prove that with Massac County determination, the sky is truly the limit.
Today in History:
On February 17, 1801, a crucial constitutional crisis reached its resolution when Thomas Jefferson was elected as the 3rd President of the United States after a tie in the Electoral College with Aaron Burr.
The House of Representatives resolved the deadlock on the 36th ballot, marking a significant moment in U.S. history. This event symbolized the first peaceful transfer of power between opposing political parties, showcasing the strength and resilience of the democratic process in the young republic.
Thomas Jefferson served two terms as President from 1801 to 1809, during which he implemented several significant policies, including the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the United States.
He advocated for limited government and agrarianism, emphasizing individual liberties. His presidency also faced challenges, such as the Embargo Act of 1807, which limited trade.
Jefferson chose not to seek a third term, demonstrating his belief in the rotation of leadership, and he left office in March 1809.

I-24 Work Beginning Soon: Motorists Encouraged to Plan Ahead
WMOK – Metropolis, IL – Metropolis Police Chief Harry Masse, alongside Chief Tolbert, participated in a meeting regarding the I-24 bridge construction held at the Kentucky Transportation Headquarters in Paducah. During this meeting, key details were shared about upcoming work and traffic management strategies.
Beginning March 2nd, eastbound lanes of I-24 will be closed, with traffic being diverted to a head-to-head setup on the westbound side.
A jersey wall will separate the opposing flows of traffic to ensure safety. Motorists should expect to see traffic diverted just west of the bridge and merging back to the eastbound side just to the east of the bridge. Chief Masse advised that traffic control measures will follow similar protocols to those implemented last year.
Chief Masse raised concerns during the meeting regarding the possibility of converting one lane on the westbound side of U.S. 45. However, transportation officials declined this request, citing safety studies indicating that maintaining ramp traffic prior to the lane closure is more secure.
In addition to the bridge construction updates, Chief Masse noted that our rest area will go out for bid in June, with plans to shut down for approximately two years. This closure may affect travel plans for many drivers.
Furthermore, a request for additional “no parking” signs on the ramps was denied, as the existing signage complies with the standards set forth by the National Highway Safety Administration.
Officials anticipate that the current phase of bridge work will be completed by October 13th. This timeline coincides with the second weekend of the upcoming encampment, which is scheduled for the 10th and 11th, potentially leading to increased traffic congestion during this busy period.
As work progresses on the I-24 bridge, local drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and plan their routes accordingly to accommodate the changes in traffic flow.
