Tomorrow is Thank Your Mail Carrier Day

Celebrated Every February 4th

📬 How to Celebrate

It is an unofficial holiday designed to show appreciation for the postal workers who deliver mail six days a week, regardless of the weather. Here are a few ways people usually celebrate:

  • Write a Thank-You Note: A simple card or note left in your mailbox is the most common way to say thanks.

  • A Simple Greeting: If you happen to be home when they arrive, a friendly “Thank you for all you do!” goes a long way.

We invite you to tune in to the WMOK Morning Show from 6am until 10am on weekdays to hear each morning’s WMOK News Check, an eclectic mix of classic country, vintage hits, cover tunes and bit of the “newer stuff” mixed in for good measure.  You can text requests, birthdays, anniversaries and the like to 618-524-9209 anytime.

If you have specific questions or concerns regarding any information please feel free to text us at that number and we will do our best to help you get the information you need.  Keep in mind the WMOK text line is to help us stay connected to the community – we want you to use it as you would to contact an old friend.

The Day the Music Died

“The Day the Music Died” refers to the tragic plane crash on February 3, 1959, near Clear Lake, Iowa, that claimed the lives of rock and roll legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, along with their 21-year-old pilot, Roger Peterson.
Key Facts of the Tragedy
  • The Cause: Faced with a freezing, broken-down tour bus during their “Winter Dance Party” tour, Holly chartered a Beechcraft Bonanza to reach their next show in Moorhead, Minnesota. The flight took off at roughly 12:55 AM in a blizzard and crashed into a cornfield just minutes later due to severe weather and pilot error.

  • The Seat Swaps:
    • Waylon Jennings (Holly’s bassist) gave his seat to The Big Bopper, who was suffering from the flu.
    • Tommy Allsup lost his seat to Ritchie Valens in a fateful coin toss.

  • Legacy and Song: The event was immortalized by singer-songwriter Don McLean in his 1971 hit “American Pie”, where he coined the famous phrase to symbolize the loss of innocence for an entire generation.
Memorials and Commemoration
  • Surf Ballroom: Fans gather annually at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, where the musicians played their final set.
  • The Crash Site: A stainless-steel monument depicting a guitar and three records marks the exact location in a cornfield north of Clear Lake.
  • Buddy Holly Center: Located in Lubbock, Texas, the Buddy Holly Center offers special events and free admission on the anniversary.
