Punxsutawney Phil Sees His Shadow

Lore Suggests: Six More Weeks of Winter!

Punxsutawney Phil, the beloved groundhog, has seen his shadow this year, forecasting six more weeks of winter for us all. This annual event continues to draw crowds and spark lively debates about whether spring will come early or if we should prepare for a longer winter season.

The tradition of Punxsutawney Phil is rooted in the European Christian holiday of Candlemas, which German settlers brought to Pennsylvania in the 18th century.

According to the lore, if the sun shone on Candlemas, the “Second Winter” would begin. While the Germans originally looked to the badger for this weather forecast, they found a lack of badgers in the American colonies and pivoted to the more abundant groundhog.
The first official trek to Gobbler’s Knob occurred on February 2, 1887, led by local newspaper editor Clymer Freas, who famously dubbed the resident groundhog “Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages.”.

Over the decades, Phil has evolved from a local superstition into a global pop-culture icon, particularly after the 1993 film Groundhog Day cemented his celebrity status.
According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Phil is not merely a succession of rodents but a single, immortal groundhog who maintains his longevity by drinking a secret “Elixir of Life” (or groundhog punch) every summer.

While meteorologists at NOAA point out that Phil has a historical accuracy rate of only about 39%, the “Inner Circle”—the group of top-hat-wearing gentlemen who care for him—maintains that Phil is never wrong; rather, the “President” simply misinterprets his “Groundhogese” from time to time.
