Winter Wellness: Supporting Older Adults During the Seasonal Blues - WMOK talks with Director Kim Abell of Massac Memorial Hospital New Beginnings Department

WMOK (Metropolis, IL) – Winter blues can significantly impact older adults, often leading to feelings of sadness, loneliness, and decreased energy. The shorter days and colder weather may limit outdoor activities, contributing to isolation. Many older individuals might struggle with the holiday season, as memories of lost loved ones can resurface.

It’s essential to encourage social connections, promote light exposure, and engage in physical activity to combat these feelings.

Support from family and friends plays a crucial role in enhancing emotional well-being during this time.

The New Beginnings department at Massac Memorial Hospital offers solace to folks in just this situation.

The New Beginnings department at Massac Memorial Hospital is a dedicated geriatric behavioral health program designed to support older adults facing emotional challenges. With a focus on fostering social connections and promoting overall well-being, the program provides essential resources and a safe environment for individuals to regain their vitality and connection.

Shawnee Community College Purchases Former Walmart Building in Anna
Shawnee Community College Purchases Former Walmart Building in Anna

ANNA, IL (January 12, 2026) – Shawnee Community College has officially completed the purchase of the entire building formerly known to the community as the “old Walmart” in Anna, now home to the Union County Extension Center (UCEC). The facility is located at 1150 Vienna Street and is owned in full by the College as of January 8, 2026.

The building houses Shawnee Community College’s Union County Extension Center, which serves as a key educational hub and houses the College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Program, certified nursing assistant programs, adult education offerings, general education courses, and a community fitness center.

The facility also includes retail tenants Dollar Tree and Rent One, both of which will remain in the building. Each has signed long-term lease agreements as part of the transition in ownership.

In 2025, the College entered into a lease agreement for the Union County Extension Center that included a negotiated purchase option at the direction of the Shawnee Community College Board of Trustees. Rather than committing to a long-term lease with escalating rental costs and significant deferred maintenance obligations, the Board determined that purchasing the entire facility was the most fiscally responsible and sustainable course of action.

“This purchase marks an important milestone for Shawnee Community College and for Union County,” said Shawnee Community College President Dr. Tim Taylor. “By owning the entire building, we ensure long-term stability for our programs, maintain positive relationships with existing tenants, and keep financial resources invested locally.”

SCC Board Chairperson, Steve Heisner, added, “By their approval of this purchase, the Board of Trustees affirms the College’s commitment to the citizens of Union County and the entire College district as it continues to look for opportunities to establish permanent facilities to serve its constituency throughout the district.”

The purchase was funded through the successful sale of General Obligation Debt Certificates, with proceeds received prior to closing. The College has also initiated the funding bond process to support long-term financing and replenish institutional reserves.

Ownership of the building aligns with the College’s Facilities Master Plan and strategic priorities by eliminating costly lease obligations, reducing deferred maintenance risk, and securing a permanent institutional presence in Union County.

While the previous building owner was located outside the Shawnee Community College district, ownership of the facility ensures that lease revenue and operating investments now remain within the local community, supporting Union County and strengthening the College’s mission for years to come.
